Miami has a shot to avenge their first round loss to Central Michigan in the MAC tournament this afternoon at 1. Central lost their game last night/this morning to the host Kent State Golden Flashes to fall into the elimination bracket.

This morning, Miami will try to avoid giving up a big inning to CMU like they did in Wednesday’s opener, when they allowed a 6-run fourth inning that was the difference in the game.

Miami advanced to today’s game by eliminating the Eastern Michigan Eagles yesterday, 11-2. Senior Graham Taylor pitched eight full innings to earn his third MAC tournament victory while freshman Eric Darlage went 4-5 with 4 RBIs in the winning effort.

MURedHawks.com has a full recap of yesterday’s game plus a couple of notes about todays game. In addition, you can get gametrackers and live audio feeds from the MAC’s tournament web site.

Miami will take on the #2 seeded Central Michigan Chippewas at approximately 4pm today in their first-round MAC Tournament Game. This will be the first time Miami and CMU have played since last year's tournament, due to the conference's scheduling quirks.
Junior Keith Weiser (3-5, 3.74 ERA) is slated to start for the RedHawks.
Even though the tournament is at Kent, Miami fans have two ways to follow the action for all of Miami's games:

Miami Triumphs Over UC

Miami's baseball team fought back from a 5-1 deficit with a six-run sixth inning and held on to take a 7-6 non-conference win from the UC Bearcats last night in a game played on Clifton's plastic grass.

After rallying in the sixth, Miami held on in the seventh and eighth, when UC managed to get a combined five runners on base, but left all of them stranded. Miami seniors Sam Short and Matt Long held UC to only one run over the last four innings.

Miami has now won 11 of its last 12 contests as the RedHawks head to the University of Akron for a three-game set with the Zips before competing in the Mid-American Conference Tournament on May 24-27 at a site that is yet to be determined.

Slump continues: MIAMI swept by BSU

Miami just can’t seem to find the magic of last season. After a very respectable showing in the toughest non-conference schedule in program history, the RedHawks have stumbled out of the gate in MAC play, dropping a three-game series for the first time since 2004 in the league opener against Toledo and, this past weekend, being swept in a three-game set for the first time since 2004 as well, as the Ball State Cardinals won 19-13, 5-0, and 4-2 in Muncie.

The Friday game was a sloppy display of offense on both sides, as Miami had 17 hits and the Cardinals 23. Miami took a 5-3 lead into the fourth inning, and Ball State exploded for eight runs off of starter Keith Weiser. The Cards plated seven more in the fifth and sixth against relievers Matt Erwood and Tommy Nurry. The RedHawks cut the lead to 18-9 in the seventh, but Ball State scored a single run in the bottom half to get to 19. Miami plated four in the ninth, but it was too little, too late.

Saturday’s affair was a 5-0 shutout for the Cardinals. Miami pitcher Graham Taylor gave up solo shots in the first and second, a run on three hits in the third, and a two-run shot in the eighth. Miami was unable to get a baserunner until the fourth, and Taylor was tagged with a complete game loss to fall to 1-4 on the season.

The RedHawks jumped out to the early lead again on Sunday thanks to Will Reynolds’ sacrifice fly. Miami followed with a run in the seventh, tying the game at 2-2. Sam Shorts, starting in place of John Ely, who was ill, turned in an excellent performance as he held the Cardinals to two runs in 6.1 innings of work. Unfortunately, reliever Jeff Day gave up two runs in his appearance, and the Cardinals never looked back, winning 4-2.

This weekend is that most magical of times in the world of Miami baseball: Opening Day. The RedHawks will travel to Furman University (who, while they lack the Robert Frost pedigree, can legitimately claim to have one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation) to take on the Paladins in a three-game set. Greenville has been kind to the RedHawks in the past, with Miami winning a season-opening series two games to one back in 2004.
The RedHawks baseball players aren’t the only ones with a coming-out party this weekend: new head coach Dan Simonds, an assistant at Miami from 2000-04 and head coach at Xavier last season, will be making his debut as RedHawks skipper after taking over for Tracy Smith, who departed for Indiana after leading the Miami to a MAC title and a record-setting performance at the NCAA regionals last season.

Baseball team rounds out coaching staff

Last week, Coach Dan Simonds announced the hiring of two assistant coaches who will fill out Miami’s staff for the 2006 season. Ben Bachmann and Kevin Ermino have 21 years of coaching experience between them. Simonds was effusive in his praise of the new hires, saying, “This staff will not only develop players, but quality people as well. I am looking forward to working with Ben and Kevin.”

For the past five seasons, Bachmann has been the pitching coach at the University of Maryland, where he tutored current Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Steve Schmoll, among others. During the 2002 season, his pitchers set school records for strikeouts and saves. He also coached at Lynn University for two seasons. Bachmann will be the recruiting coordinator and outfielders coach and will assist with the pitchers.

Ermino’s fourteen-year coaching career has seen him filling many roles, most recently as the pitching coach at Middle Tennessee State University, where his star pupil was Dewon Brazelton, the #3 overall draft pick in 2001. Prior to his time at MTSU, Ermino was the pitching coach at Berry College and an assistant with catchers and hitters at ACC powerhouse Clemson.

John Ely, a freshman on Miami University’s baseball team, has been tabbed as a freshman all-American by the editors of Baseball America. A first-team selection, he was the only player from the Mid-American Conference to earn a place on either the first or second team.
