(on the wrong end of) A Game for the Ages

Miami University was a decided underdog heading into Saturday night’s NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Championship game against Boston University, but Miami seemed determined to continue their trend of upsets in the tournament.

That’s probably what made the end of the game so hard to take.

Miami fought back from an early 1-0 deficit in the first period to tie up the Terriers in the second, then scored two goals late in the third to take a seemingly insurmountable 3-1 lead. They were clogging center ice, keeping BU from exploiting their speed advantage, and hitting as hard as they had all season.

But after that third goal, BU gambled and pulled the goalie with just over three minutes to play in favor of an extra attacker. And in the last minute, BU scored twice in 47 seconds to send the game to overtime.

Miami had its chances in the overtime, but BU capitalized on a fluke goal - deflected off a diving Kevin Roeder - and took the title.

And Miami saw their improbable run come to an end.

To be sure, MIami made the most of their invitation to the NCAAs. After being eliminated from the CCHA tournament at home, there was uncertainty if they would even be invited to the NCAA tournament; they turned out being the next-to-last team in. Once in, however, they proceeded to upset the #1 and #3 seeds in the West Regional, Denver and Minnesota-Duluth. On Thursday they eliminated upstart Bemidji State. And frankly, they gave BU all they could handle and more for 59 minutes.

Most of all, they made us proud.

The silver lining, if there can be any silver lining 90 minutes after losing, is that the team is young; this was supposed to be their rebuilding year. And if the team can keep their focus over the summer, next year should be even better.

Miami defeated Bemidji State this evening 4-1 in their National Semifinal game in Washington, DC. This small feat means that Miami will play on Saturday for their first-ever NCAA Championship. MIami will face the winner of this evening's BostonU - Vermont match.

Update: Boston came back from a 4-3 deficit late in the 3rd to beat the UVM Catamonts 5-4. So your #4 seed Miami RedHawks will be playing the Boston Terriers in the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME on Saturday at 7pm.

P.S. Thanks to RedHawk65 for the graphic.

After sweeping the University of Nebraska-Omaha this weekend by scores of 7-2 and 5-2, Miami Ice Hockey has jumped to the #1 ranking in both the new USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and the new uscho.com/CSTV poll. Miami now has a record of 6-0-0, which includes sweeps of then-#20 Vermont and then-#12 Ohio State.Early in the season Miami has been led statistically by junior Justin Mercier (team leading six goals and a co-team leading eight points) and freshman Carter Camper (team leading five assists and a co-team leading eight points). Junior Jeff Zatkoff has been in net for five of Miami's six games, and sports a save percentage of .951 and a goals against average of 1.20. As a team, Miami is averaging 4.7 goals on 32 shots per game while allowing only 1.3 goals on 26 shots per game. Of note, Miami has remained undefeated even with preseason all-CCHA senior Nathan Davis out with an injury for all but a portion of the first game. Miami hockey next plays this weekend when the RedHawks travel north to play Northern Michigan University. Prior to Thanksgiving, the RedHawks have key CCHA matchups at home versus Notre Dame and at Michigan State.Congratulations to the Miami Ice Hockey team on achieving its #1 national ranking. Here's hoping this is the first of many honors for the RedHawks between now and April.http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=PL_03_01_01&id=203764http://www.uscho.com/rankings/?type=d1

I just received the following from Elliot Olshansky, one of CSTV’s hockey editors. Enjoy!

Hello all,
CSTV.com is pleased to announce that Miami University forward Nathan Davis and University of North Dakota defenseman Brian Lee will be the guests for this week’s “Tuesday @ the Rink” chats, presented by CSTV.com and USCHO. The chats move back an hour starting this week, as Davis will join us at 1 p.m. ET and Lee will chat at 2 p.m. ET.
Davis, who leads the nation in points with 34 (14g, 20a), will lead the RedHawks against Ohio State in a home-and-home this weekend, with Saturday night’s game at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford being televised live on CSTV (8 p.m. ET). Lee, who leads North Dakota in defenseman scoring with 12 points (1g, 11a), will be in action when the Fighting Sioux host Wisconsin this weekend in a meeting between the defending WCHA and NCAA champions. Both chat rooms are open now, so fans can submit questions in advance.

With last night’s 3-1 win over Ferris, Miami head coach Enrico Blasi became the winningest coach in Miami history. His 122d victory passed former RedHawks coach (now Senior Associate AD) Steve Cady, who racked up 121 from 1978-79 to 1984-85. Read more at MURedHawks.com.
In other hockey news, Matt and Nathan Davis were profiled in today’s (Cleveland) Plain Dealer. Bet you didn’t know that Matt is a neat freak and Nathan’s a slob!

The USCHO/INCH/USA Today #3 Miami ice hockey team traveled to South Bend and the cavernous JACC this weekend to face off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. After dropping one of two to Northern Michigan at the Goggin last weekend, the RedHawks needed to get points at the cavernous JACC (I like the phrase, I think I’ll keep saying it) to ensure their spot atop the CCHA was secure. With a 2-2 tie on Friday and a 3-2 victory on Saturday, Miami did just that, netting three points on the weekend to widen the gap over second-place LSSU, who had the weekend off.
Among the weekend’s standouts were freshman Raymond Eichenlaub, who scored two goals in Saturday’s win, senior Hobey Baker candidate Andy Greene, who recorded a goal and an assist on Friday, and junior Marty Guerin, who broke a nine-game scoreless streak with an assist on Saturday. The RedHawks remained at #3 in the polls after the weekend.
