MAC Tournament Time

As we roll into November, it is MAC Tournament time for many of the fall sports. Miami already has one MAC champion as Laura Neufarth won the individual championship in women's cross country last weekend. This weekend, two more teams begin their quest for a MAC tournament title.Today, field hockey begins the MAC tournament with a match versus Missouri State. Miami is seeded third with a conference record of 6-4 (overall record of 8-10) while Missouri State is seeded sixth with a conference record of 1-9 (overall record of 2-18). The winner plays second seed Kent State (7-3, 12-8) in the semifinals on Saturday with the championship game on Sunday. The tournament will be played in Oxford so hopefully there will be a large crowd there to cheer the RedHawks to victory. Soccer finishes the regular season with a match in Oxford versus Ball State today. The Redhawks currently have a record of 4-5-1 in the MAC and 6-8-3 overall. The RedHawks are currently tied for seventh in the league standings, with the top eight teams qualifying for the MAC tournament. Hopefully the RedHawks can pull the upset of first place Ball State (8-1-1) and not have to rely on help to make the tourney field. The MAC Championships begin this Sunday at campus sites, with the last two rounds next weekend.Good luck to the field hockey and soccer teams as they attempt to win a MAC tournament title.

New Assistant Coach

After the departure of Assistant Coach Kathleen Schanne, who left Oxford for the beautiful and friendly (?) confines of Kent State, where she will be Head Coach of the Golden Flashes’ field hockey team, the RedHawks were short a staff member. That vacancy has been filled with the hiring of Katie Kanara from St. Louis University.

Kanara was at SLU for one year, serving as the goaltender coach and defensive coordinator before being promoted to interim head coach halfway through the season. Seven of her players earned postseason accolades, including goaltender Amy Wasserman, who was named first team all-conference. Kanara herself has plenty of experience with the defense. In 2000, she was a reserve goaltender for Old Dominion’s national championship team. After transferring to Indiana University the next season, she went on to set school records for victories in a season and goals against average in her senior campaign, and she was named to the Big Ten all-tournament team.

Defense isn’t Kanara’s only focus, though. She also emphasizes academics, which should make her a fine fit at Miami. Eleven members of her Billikens squad were named to the NHFCA Academic All-American team, and Kanara herself made the team three times at IU while receiving the Big Ten Scholar-Athlete Award three times as well.

Welcome to Miami, Coach Kanara!

After playing two overtime games in two days, the Miami field hockey team's scintillating MAC tournament run came to an end on Saturday in Mount Pleasant as the RedHawks fell to the Central Michigan Chippewas 3-1. It was Miami's first title game since the tournament moved to a six-team format.
The Chips' Kelly Jordan came through with a hat trick for the tournament hosts, while Taylor Florence connected for the RedHawks' lone goal. Kerri Orr, Courtney Fretz, and Teja Kammler were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The FieldHawks held off the exhaustion they must have felt after yesterday's four-OT marathon and overcame a poor offensive day (only two shots on goal) to prevail over Ohio University in a comparatively short one overtime game this afternoon in Mount Pleasant. Miami, now 10-11 on the season meets Central Michigan tomorrow afternoon for the MAC title and the right to play the America East champ for a berth to the NCAA tournament -- a remarkable opportunity for a team that won just one game two years ago.

Miami's FieldHawks outlasted Ball State this afternoon in a marathon four-overtime game at the MAC tourney in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Tied at 2 after regulation, the teams played to a scoreless draw through two rounds of field overtime play before embarking on penalty stroke shoot-out. Still tied after that overtime round, the teams extended the shootout into a fourth overtime before Meredith Corradino finally netted the game winner for Miami. We'll be interested to see whether this game -- with a nineteen-shot penalty shoot off -- was the longest in Miami history. In the meantime, OU awaits tomorrow afternoon.

The FieldHawks dropped a 2-0 decision at Kent on Friday before rebounding with a convincing 5-1 win over OU on Saturday in Athens. (You can read more about the OU game here.)
With the weekend split against the league's top two teams, Miami is 4-3 in MAC play (7-8 overall) and trails league-leading OU by one game. By comparison, at this time last October, the FieldHawks were still looking for their first conference win in over four years -- a drought they broke last October 22nd. We've said it before, but you really ought to start paying attention to the phenomenal job Coach Jill Reeve is doing with this program.

It was a heartbreaking week for the Miami field hockey team, who lost back-to-back overtime games against #9 Ohio State and Ball State.
Ohio State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on Wednesday, but sophomore Adele French cut the margin in half in the 22nd minute. The RedHawks were held scoreless again until six minutes remained in the second half, when senior Keri von Kalinkowski connected on a penalty corner. Four minutes into overtime, though, Ohio State slipped one past goalkeeper Kerri Orr, giving the Buckeyes a 3-2 win. Miami was outshot 19 to 2 for the game.
On Friday, defense was the word as neither the RedHawks nor the Cardinals were able to score in regulation. Ball State scored on a three-on-one rush in overtime for a 1-0 victory.

It was a successful week for the Miami field hockey team. The RedHawks won their first two home games of the season, beating St. Louis 4-2 and Davidson 2-0. Miami, now 3-4 on the year, opens MAC play at home against Kent State on Saturday.
Tuesday's game against St. Louis featured an excellent second-half attack by the RedHawks, who scored three goals in the final 45 minutes to win after going to halftime tied 1-1 with the Billikens. Miami was led by two goals from sophomore forward Christine Loyd, who netted both the game's first goal and the game-winner. Other Miami scores came from freshman Danielle Gaynor and sophomore Meghan McMurtry. For the first time since playing the University of the Pacific on Aug. 28, the RedHawks had an edge in both shots and corners.
The winning ways continued on Sunday, as goaltender Kerri Orr recorder her first shutout of the season, blanking the Davidson Wildcats 2-0. Two first half goals from sophomores Alyssa Nye and Taylor Florence proved to be enough, as Orr recorded six saves on the afternoon.

Head Coach Jill Reeve's field hockey squad is opening the season on a West Coast swing, with games at Stanford, Pacific, and Cal. After two of three games, the RedHawks are 1-1 on the season.

Saturday's game against the Cardinal resulted in a thrilling overtime win for Miami. While Stanford scored first to take a 1-0 lead at the 7:20 mark in the first half, sophomore forward Taylor Florence knotted the score at the 23-minute mark when she knocked in a rebound. Stanford had three penalty corners in the second half, but Miami's defense held strong. Then, just 3:57 into overtime, Florence, with assists from sophomore forward Alyssa Nye and senior forward Keri von Kalinkowski, scored on Stanford keeper Madison Bell to give the RedHawks a 2-1 victory, Miami's first in four contests with Stanford.

On Sunday, the RedHawks traveled to Stockton to take on the Pacific Tigers. Despite outshooting Pacific 10-8 and having nine penalty corners to the Tigers' two, Miami dropped a 2-0 decision. Florence was a standout once again, recording six shots in the losing effort.

Miami wraps up the West Coast swing with a game against Cal on Tuesday at 3 p.m. PT.
