http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/news/index/ Miami RedHawks sports talk and more en Miami Hawk Talk | SFB Gnomic Industries 2008-09-26T13:54:00-05:00 http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/news/story/pre_mac_update/ As many of Miami's team enter conference play, here is a brief summary of where the "ball-sports" stand.Field Hockey has had a very successful non-conference campaign.  The RedHawks currently stand 6-2 (1-0 in the MAC), outscoring their opponents 27-12.  Senior Elizabeth Gilroy is the team's leading scorer, with five goals and 13 points.  Freshman Abbey Huck has started seven of Miami's eight games, and has a goals against average of 1.93.  Miami next plays on September 27th versus Missouri State.Volleyball has been a streaky team thus far in 2008, with a six game winning streak followed up with a four game losing streak; the team's current record is 7-6 (1-0 in the MAC).  The RedHawks won the UNLV tournament (including a win over then 10th ranked Wisconsin) earlier this season, and started MAC play with a win versus Bowling Green.  They next play on September 27th at Western Michigan.Soccer has struggled thus far in 2008, with a record of 1-6-1 entering conference play.  Most recently, the RedHawks went 0-1-1 on their California trip, losing to Sacramento State and tieing San Jose State.  Even with the lopsided record, the RedHawks have only been outscored 13-9 this season.  Sophomore Sara Lund has scored five of Miami's nine goals of the year.  Miami opens its MAC schedule on Friday versus Eastern Michigan and Sunday versus Central Michigan.Football enters its bye week with a 1-3 record, losing to three BCS-conference teams.  Miami's leading offensive players have been running back Thomas Merriweather (260 yards, 3.5 average) and wide receiver Jamal Rodgers (16 receptions for 148 yards).  Football next plays on October 4th versus Temple in its MAC opener.   stevo 2008-09-26T12:54:00-05:00 http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/news/story/welcome_to_the_2008_09_miami_athletic_year/ Many of Miami's fall sports kick off their 2008-09 season this weekend, with most of them performing at home.Thursday, Miami football kicks off its season with a nationally televised game versus Vanderbilt, the first SEC team to ever visit Yager Stadium.Friday, volleyball starts its season by hosting the Best Western Classic.  Miami's first game is versus St. Louis while the RedHawks then host Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.  Miami volleyball enters the season coming off a MAC tournament championship and an NCAA berth.  Miami enters the season with high expectations as the RedHawks have been picked by the MAC coaches as favorites to win the MAC East.Saturday, field hockey begins its season with weekend games at home versus Davidson and Richmond (on Sunday).  Last season the Redawks finished as runners-up in the MAC title game, falling one win short of an NCAA berth.  The RedHawks were picked to finish second in the conference this season by the league's coaches.Also on Saturday, men's and women's cross country begin their seasons by competing at the Flyer 5K race in Dayton.  Last year the men and women both won the team competition, led by Pat Sovacool (men) and Laura Neufarth (women) who both won the individual races (both of these standouts return this season).While not beginning its season, Miami's soccer team hosts Michigan on Sunday.  The RedHawks won their season opener 3-1 versus Morehouse State behind Sara Lund's three goals and six saves by Krista Pace.  Lund's performance earned her MAC Player of the Week honors.Good luck to all of Miami's teams this weekend and welcome to the 2008-09 fall sports season! Men's Sports, Men's Basketball mollautt 2008-08-01T20:16:00-05:00 http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/news/story/john_pont_1927_2008/ Legendary Miami player and coach John Pont died this morning in Oxford.  He was eighty.  To younger Miamians, Pont was mostly the stuff of lore, whether for his groundbreaking play as a halfback at Miami from 1949-1951, for his stint as a Navy submariner, or for his work as a fine coach, who led Miami to a 43-22-2 mark, including a sterling 25-8-2 record on league play over seven seasons before departing for Yale.  Pont is one of only three Miami football players ever to have his jersey retired.  On the national scene, Pont is probably best known as the miracle worker who led Indiana University to its only Rose Bowl appearance.  That feat garnered him national coach of the year honors in 1967.  It was still foremost in Terry Hoeppner’s mind when he followed Pont’s footsteps from Oxford to Bloomington, seeing possibilities where others saw only problems.  Pont also coached at Northwestern in the early 1970s.In his later years, Pont, still unable to get football out of his blood, started a football program from scratch at the College of Mount Saint Joseph and even spent fifteen years teaching the game in Japan.  He was also a constant presence in and around Oxford and a living link between the Cradle of Coaches tradition and a new generation of Miamians.  They—and we—will mourn his loss today.  EDIT:  I’d encourage everyone to watch Bake’s excellent tribute to Coach Pont.  Miami’s sports information office and Pete Conrad also have well-written obits.  Men's Sports, Football, General News DevilGrad 2008-07-01T18:26:00-05:00 http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/news/story/2008_deveroes_summer_basketball_league_information/ The Deveroes Summer Basketball League starts this Sunday (June 15, 2008-Father's Day) at Woodward High School in Cincinnati.  5 current Miami players including all 3 incoming freshman will be competing it the league.  Assume that most current and former Miami players will be on Brick Street, but may also be on other teams as well.  Brick Street is the defending regular season champion.MHT.com Deveroes Information ThreadCURRENT MIAMI PLAYERS LISTED: Sr. PG Carl Richburg, Sr. C Tyler Dierkers, Fr. Explosive in transition. Has handles, can lead breaks. On-ball D is an asset. Can finish strong at basket, limited shooting range. Must learn to get others involved. Shot selection suspect."Javonte Clanton:  Originally from Columbus (Reynoldsburg), he signed with Niagara in 2006 and played 4 games in the 2006-07 season before going JUCO.  He spent the last season at Blinn (J.C.) where he signed with Big XII's Colorado.  He was just recently released from his LOI by Colorado and is looking to come back home.  While playing for Blinn, Clanton averaged 10.5 ppg, 2.5 apg and shot 54% from the field.  Javonte said in a Rivals.com story last week, "I've gotten a lot of calls from schools like Bowling Green, Miami-Ohio, Morehead State, Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina, Cincinnati, and Youngstown State so far. He played his AAU basketball for team Odom and is currently being recruited at the Division One level."Kramer Soderberg:  Son of former Wisconsin and SLU head coach Brad Soderberg.  Was selected the Gatorade player of the year for Missouri and also the St. Louis Post-Dispatch player of the year, averaged 24.4 points and made 63 3-pointers while leading the Warriors to a second-place finish in Missouri’s Class 4.  Nearly a 50% 3 point shooter.  Offered by UWGB, La Salle, Miami, Wichita State.Soderberg MHT.com Thread Discussion     Another 2008 high school point guard in the MHT.com database is Chris Crockett of Columbus.  There has not been much discussion of this player in the last year.  Crockett MHT.com Thread Discussion Men's Sports, Men's Basketball mollautt 2008-05-08T20:25:00-05:00 http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/news/story/tennis_goes_for_a_title/ This weekend Miami's tennis team competes in the Mid Amercian Conference women's tennis championships in an attempt to win its first MAC tournament title since 1998.  The RedHawks come into the tournament in a strong position, finishing the MAC regular season with a 7-1 record (its best record since 1999) and a second place finish.  Overall, Miami finished the regular season with a record of 13-6, which included non-conference wins versus Dayton, Cincinnati, and Xavier (all by 7-0 scores).  Miami has not played many close matches this season - only one ended with a 4-3 score (a loss at Maryland) and 15 ended with final scores of 7-0 or 6-1. In singles play, Miami has been led by freshman Anastasia Dracheva (11-3 in the number one slot), sophomore Brintney Larson (13-6, mostly from the number two slot), freshman Megan Martzolf (10-4), senior Kelly Douple (14-5, including 8-0 in the MAC), and senior Leda Pesatova (12-6).  Overall, Miami is 79-35 in singles play, including 38-10 (.792) in the MAC.  Many different players and combinations led Miami to a 34-23 doubles record, but the standout combination was Leda Pesatova and Sydnee Bridger, who ended the season with a record of 11-4, including 6-2 in the MAC. The MAC tournament begins Friday as Miami plays seventh seeded Ball State (8-10, 1-6) at 2pm.  If Miami wins, they would play either #3 Toledo or #6 Buffalo at 2pm on Saturday.  The tournament finals will be held on Sunday at noon with top seeded Western Michigan (14-7, 7-0) looming on the other side of the bracket.Congratulations to the Miami tennis team on its outstanding season and good luck at the MAC tournament!   Women's Sports, Women's Olympic Sports, Tennis stevo 2008-04-24T16:39:00-05:00 http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/news/story/miami_golf_outing_fundraiser/ Many of you know that Miami’s Golf team is unique among Miami’s sports in that it is required to be self-supporting. Entry fee for the event is $250 per person and includes greens fee, cart, range balls, lunch, beverages, dinner and a player gift. The format is a four-person scramble with Gross and Net Divisions.
