2008 PROSPECT: Mike can play either OL or DT in college but the Redhawks are recruiting Mike as a defensive lineman. Johns was brought up to the varsity as a sophomore and has started at a defensive end position for Oak Forest the past two seasons. He had 66 tackles and 12 sacks as a junior and was named all-area. Fully qualified with a 3.0 GPA and a 23 on his ACT. Attended the Nike Training Football Camp at Purdue University in May and at Miami in June. Currently plays DE and has terrific speed off the edge but has the body that could move him to DT.

ESPN $coutsInc Player Profile Ranking of 59. Evaluation:
Johns is a defensive end with good size. He comes across as a high motor type kid, but at times that energy can seem a bit wild and out of control. He can be physical and has a solid get-off. He tends to attack with his shoulder rather than staying square and shooting his hands. He will lean into a blocker and turn his upper body and the initial blow can force him to have to step back and at times he can be driven down field. When he tries to cross a defender?s face he will turn his shoulders again and expose his back and he can be washed clear down the line of scrimmage. He will flash the ability to squeeze down and stay square and shuffle. At times though he will turn his shoulder and come down to far and lose containment and at others he will blindly run up-field and take himself out of the play. He does a good job of getting low and taking on pulling linemen and not getting kicked out. He hustles around. He has very adequate short-area change-of-direction skills. As a pass rusher he needs to develop some pass rush to help him work past blockers. Johnson plays with some energy, but needs to keep working on technique.
