2007 PROSPECT: One of the top players in the State for 2007. Miami very interested. Miami recruiting as a WR....he's also considered a top notch S prospect. Terrific hands. Cousin is former Marshall standout WR Brad Bates and Chris will spend his summer preparing for next season by working out with Bates. Comes from a terrific family and a quality education should be a big factor in deciding where Chris will land. $cout Profile with Video Ohio High Top 100 Countdown-Givens #20 $cout June Midwest "Hot 100" #43

One of the top players in Southern Ohio next year will be junior WR/DB Chris Givens from Chillicothe. Givens stands in at 6-3, 190 pounds and has the speed (4.47) to go with it. Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Boston College, Northwestern, and Alabama are all sending Chris mail.  He camped at Miami, Cincinnati and Akron camps last summer and will be attending Nike, Michigan, and Ohio State next summer.  Givens list of his favorites are: Ohio State, Miami, Wisconsin and Northwestern

Miami could be a big player for Givens’s signature.

"I have a brother and sister at Miami. The academics are top drawer. I can’t stress enough that academics will be the deciding factor on what I decide to do."

Givens hopes to major in business administration and has a 3.1 GPA and just took the ACT last Saturday.

Academics are important to Chris:

"The academics are going to be very important,.  Good coaches and nice campus will be important. I want a campus where I can focus on my studies.  I am most interested in my education. I would love to play in the NFL but I know that is a dream. I am going to college to get an education."

Givens played all over the place for his team this past season and although he favors playing WR in college it wouldn’t make much difference if he ends up as a Safety.

Chris also plays basketball for Chillicothe and runs track.

Chris tells Duane Long that a decision will come shortly:

"I am real close to a decision. I will make it in the third or fourth week of July."

Chris has listed Miami, Cincinnati, Akron, Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern and Louisville as his favorites.  More schools became interested after the Louisville Scout combine:

"I did really well at the Scout combine.  It triggered some new interest. Louisville, West Virginia, Purdue, Indiana, Vanderbilt all have been showing a great deal of interest since.  Miami is one of my favorites. My brother is there.

After Chris commits, the school that receives his services is in for a bonus:

"I would like to be on campus for spring ball.

Chris to decide tomorrow

"I’m going to make my decision Monday,” Givens said Friday evening. “It’s going to be a public announcement."

The recruiting process for Givens began January 2 when he got his first scholarship offer from Miami (Ohio) - where his older brother is currently a student (which could factor in the decision).  After that, the calls, letters, visits and even text messages have been on a non-stop basis, trying to land the athlete ranked by one Ohio scouting Web site as the 13th best overall player in the state.

"I think people started catching notice when I went to two combines. I went to a combine in Columbus and I did really well up there. I ran the 40 and caught a couple of nice passes. Then I got the MVP at one of the top combines in the nation, Scout.com, in Louisville. That’s when I started getting phone calls and 20 to 30 letters in the mail.  “I really like the attention and the publicity. But I’m keeping a mellow head about it."

So what school will Chris select:

"Yeah, I’ll give you some hints. It’s between Miami, Cincinnati, Akron and Michigan State. Those are the four schools that I’m really into that I really like.  The No. 1 decision is a school that’s going to have great academics. No. 2 is a nice football program. No. 3 is probably location. Not close to home or anything, but how the campus is and is it a nice campus where I don’t have to worry about anything happening to me or any trouble."

Givens said that though people may expect his decision to be swayed by the words of recruiters and scouts, he ensures it is his own.

"I think a lot of people are going to be surprised. It’s something people wouldn’t think I would do, but when I explain myself, people will think I made my decision my way. Some think it’s because recruiters tell me what I can do in the future and what I can become. This is more my own family decision."
