About Miami Hawk Talk Recruiting Information

The recruiting information contained on this site is information about student/athletes BELIEVED to be targeted by Miami University for various varsity athletic sports. The lists are far from complete and are not officially endorsed in any way by Miami University, its coaches or administration.

These pages will be updated as information is made available. Information may not be complete or timely and is compiled by newspaper articles, internet recruiting sites, and, of course, by Miami Hawk Talk Field Reporters. Players may "verbally" commit to a program, however, such committment is not binding until officially executing a "National Letter of Intent" (NLI).

Miami coaches and or its staff are not permitted to discuss or comment on potential recruits until after the signing of a NLI. The signing period for fall sports such as football begins in early February and runs until early April; basketball and other winter sports have an early signing perdiod in mid-November and a late signing period from April to May.

CLASS OF 2007: Clayton (Ohio) Northmont junior quarterback Clay Belton has enjoyed a strong first season as the starter. The 6-6, 212-pound Belton has helped lead the Thunderbolts to a 5-1 start and positioned Northmont for a possible Division I playoff. So far this year, Belton has completed 96 of 168 passes (57.1 percent) for 1,423 yards and 16 touchdowns against seven interceptions. He has also rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Miami, USC, Ohio State, Texas, Florida, Florida State and Notre Dame have been watching the left-handed signal caller. He attended camps at OSU and Pittsburgh this past summer.

Ranked as the #3 player in Ohio:

Belton has size, standing in at 6-6, and has a big arm to go with pretty good athleticism. He is a pocket passer but he does run the quarterback draw. He handles himself pretty well when he needs to break the pocket.

I usually see most left-handed quarterbacks as a bit awkward in their throwing motion but I don’t see that with Belton. He is smooth and over the top with his delivery and gets rid of the ball pretty quickly for a long-armed kid. Belton has all the throws in his repertoire as he can throw 25-30 yard ropes with velocity and accuracy but can show a deft touch when he needs to.

Despite his impressive physical tools, I was most impressed with Belton’s reading and making good decisions, especially since last year was his first as a starter. For Belton to come along this quickly tells me two things: he is well-schooled in Lance Schneider’s Northmont program and the sky is the limit on his upside.

The comparison that comes to mind is current Jacksonville Jaguar quarterback Byron Leftwich; however Belton is more mobile. He ran the third fastest shuttle at Northmont in their most recent testing and that is impressive considering the caliber of athletes coming out of that program right now.

Belton will have played against a higher level of competition in the Greater Western Ohio Conference, which is something he has over the other top quarterbacks in the state this year.
