Jonathan Malloy

Position 2G Height 6-5 Weight 185 School Compton Centennial Hometown Los Angeles, CA Incoming Year 2006

Jonathan, who is 6 foot 5 inches tall, has guard skills, but was forced unfortunately last year to play the post for his high school team because no one else wanted the job? You might say that the kid had to pull off a “Hassan Adams” insofar as being out of position yet giving his all for the sake of the team. But now Jonathan Malloy has a chance to show and prove this year at Compton Centennial High School what many saw him do on the AAU stage: this 6-5 wing guard can flat out play.  From a talent evaluator’s perspective, this sleek prospect has a good upside with very good leaping and slashing ability to go along with an aggressive offensive mindset for a wing player his height. But when you take into account Malloy’s improved jump shot and overall more intense defensive ability over the spring and summer you could consider him one of the better players left on the west coast available in 06’.  Jonathan is hearing from schools all over the country that have written and phoned to talk with him.  The schools that seemed the most serious were Colorado and Miami University

Malloy doesn’t have a timetable of when he’ll decide on which school he’ll play for and he states that his grades are in line with qualifying for a state school and possibly at a high academic institution. The score he gets on his SAT will lead him to possibly narrow down his choices in the next few weeks.  Malloy does have two goals that he seems bent on accomplishing: finding a good business program to flourish at the next level and helping Compton Centennial find redemption for the early loss to Oak Park in the playoffs last year.

Jonathan Malloy could be the sleeper of the season. His AAU coach, Rock Johnson of Amer-I-Can, has rave reviews of this “great kid with the super work ethic”. This confidence by Johnson in Malloy seems to perk Malloy up when I relate what Johnson has said about him. Malloy states, “I’m proud that people think a lot about me. Now its go out and prove it time. There really is nothing left to do but give my team everything I have and just go out and prove it to everyone who doubts us.”

Here is what socallhoops.com said about Jonathan during his sophomore year:

"Jonathan Malloy, 6’4” Sophomore, Centennial (Compton CA) Lanky wing runs floor well and finishes in transition. A real sleeper in the class."

Here is what fullcourtpress.com said about Jonathan:

"Jonathan Malloy 6’5” Centennial (Compton CA), Intriguing prospect is very athletic and oozing with potential.  While Centennial teammates Thompson and Johnson get more ink, Malloy may have more long-term promise."

Here is another review of Jonathan:

"SF Jonathan Malloy - 6’5 185# (Centennial HS, Compton, CA) Per scout.com “Long and bouncy wing with a very nice upside. Offensive skills need polishing, but very good athlete and competes well. Possible mid to high major prospect.” List includes TULANE, Tulsa, Miss St and Portland)

and yet another review from this past summer:

Jonathan Malloy, 6-5 JR SF Compton (Calif.) Centennial. Malloy has a great upside, with a long, lean body and explosive athleticism. His ball skills are much better than they were a year ago – he made some great passes this weekend. Outside shot is still a work in progress, but it isn’t broke. A likely mid major prospect who might go higher if the shot comes around.

Malloy has a good basketball body, long and lean, and he’s a very good athlete. His offensive game is just starting to blossom and it is thought that he has a considerable upside.  This summer he was hearing from Cincinnati, Seton Hall, Providence, San Francisco, Mississippi State, Tulane, Tulsa, Portand and William & Mary.  Malloy said he has a 2.4 GPA and he’ll take the SAT
