2010 Prospect:  This high school senior was just named Ohio Division I First Team All-State, was the Toledo Blade's Player of the Year, and was named conference MVP.  The Toledo Blade wrote recently:

Henderson, a versatile 6-2 senior guard for the 10-9 Spartans, averaged 28.3 points and 8.6 rebounds during the regular season, and closed his career last week as Start's career scoring leader with 1,350 points.

WTOL.com Feature on Henderson:

Henderson averages 29 points a game, and so far this season has yet to put up less than 20.

"Jim Welling from Central said ‘you can't stop him, you just try to contain him a little bit,' and it's so hard to stop him," explains Henderson's Start High School coach, Ted Pasqualone.

"His basketball intellect is so high its unbelievable. He understands the game so well and he doesn't force anything, he has a high shooting percentage, he doesn't turn the ball over, and he's our leading rebounder on top of it."

"I try to get my teammates involved a lot. That really helps me get my shots off. If they're playing good then they can't just double team me the whole game so it helps me a lot when my teams playing good," Anthony says.

Henderson is rapidly approaching two school records—the individual season and career scoring marks at Start. Although he's made a name out of putting up big numbers, Anthony's focus isn't on the scoring column.

"I don't try to make it a big deal. I just want to win games, and I just keep that in my mind and I don't think about the points. I just play my hardest to win, and the stats will be there if I play hard," he says.

Toledo Blade Feature on Henderson (03/25/10):

Start's senior has a motor that rarely stops on the court - an eight-cylinder model that cranked out 27.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. His offensive arsenal ranged from beyond the 3-point arc, to mid-range jumpers fromvirtually all angles, and further inward to acrobatic slashes to the basket.

For his work this season, Henderson - who broke Start's 28-year-old career scoring record and finished with 1,350 points - is The Blade's 2010 boys player of the year.

Henderson also was named player of the year in the City League, shared that honor on the Associated Press Division I all-district team, and earlier this week garnered first-team AP All-Ohio recognition.

"He's been a joy the whole time," the elder Henderson said. "He got started with football and basketball when he was four years old, and we just stressed the fundamentals.

"I always thought, if he knew the fundamentals, once the athletic ability came he would be over the top. That's kind of how it worked out."

Having recently achieved a qualifying score on his college entrance exam, Henderson is weighing scholarship offers from four Mid-American Conference schools - Toledo, Bowling Green, Ball State, and Miami.

"When I was growing up I was told, when I played, to act like I'd been there before," Henderson Jr. said. "So, I don't really get into all that trash talking. All that's going to do is make you look stupid, especially if you don't perform the way you're talking.

"I just go out there and try to play at 100 percent at all times. I know if I don't, someone else will."

Second-year Spartans head coach Ted Pasqualone was equal parts fan and coach of his standout senior.

"Anthony is the greatest kid in the world," Pasqualone said. "He's such a quiet, shy kid, but you wouldn't know it when he gets on the basketball court. It's really a pleasure to coach him because he never questions anything. He was always positive about everything, and always made sure his teammates were involved.

"When we played Libbey he scored 44 points and we lost 65-64. He was disappointed, but he didn't criticize anybody. He just wished that we would've won."

Coaches from the City League's top teams also were impressed by Henderson's game.

"Anthony is extremely athletic and very difficult to defend against," said Jim Welling of City champion Central Catholic, which lost to Start on Henderson's late 3-pointer. "If you put a bigger kid on him, he'll go by you because he's got such great quickness. If you put a smaller guy on him, his vertical [jumping ability] is such that he'll shoot over you."

"Anthony required a lot of preparation because he was such a talent," said veteran St. John's Jesuit coach Ed Heintschel, whose Titans were district champions. "He just put constant pressure on you. From the time he came across half court, he was a threat to score both from behind the arc and off the dribble getting to the basket."

ESPN Evaluation:

October, 2009: Anthony is a combo guard that is learning to be a point guard. He is a very good scorer as he led the Toledo City League in scoring last season. He is a solid shooter with range to 20 feet. He has the ability to create his own shot...
