Icers sweep UNO, take early CCHA lead

Miami swept Nebraska-Omaha this weekend 6-3, 3-2 for the hockey team's first-ever sweep of the Mavericks in Omaha. With four points, the RedHawks sit alone atop the CCHA after the first weekend of league play.

In Friday's game, UNO took an early 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Miami responded in the second with goals from Andy Greene and Chris Michael and led 2-1 at the beginning of the third. The game's final period was an offensive explosion, as Miami outscored UNO 4-2 on goals from Greene, Michael, Ryan Jones, and everyone's favorite presidential descendent, Marty Guerin. The game's three stars were Greene, Guerin, and Matt Christie.

Saturday's action was slower-paced. Matt Davis opened the scoring with a first-period goal. The Mavs tied things up early in the second, but Michael responded with a power-play goal at the 11:29 mark. UNO knotted things up a minute later, though. Miami survived a tense five-minute major on Alec Martinez that spanned the intermission, and the momentum paid off as Mitch Ganzak netted the game-winner halfway through the third. Jeff Zatkoff was scintillating in net for the RedHawks, recording 25 saves--including several on a desperate UNO flurry near game's end. The three stars were Zatkoff, UNO's Scott Parse, and Ganzak.
