Ice Hawkey starts 1-1 at the Lefty

The RedHawks ice hockey team kicked off the season in earnest this weekend, hosting the Lefty McFadden Invitational at the Nutter Center in Dayton. With a 1-1 record for the weekend, Miami finished third at the tournament.

On Saturday, the RedHawks put together a fine offensive attack, but they ran into a brick wall--North Dakota goalie Jordan Parise, who stopped an eye-popping 37 shots on goal on the way to the game's first star. Miami freshman goalie Jeff Zatkoff stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced, and the team with the banned nickname got an empty-netter as time expired to get a 3-0 win.

Sunday was a much better day for the RedHawks, as they recorded a 4-0 win over the Wayne State Warriors (ne Tartars, as long as we're on the subject of disreputable nicknames). Zatkoff picked up both his first win and first shutout of his Miami career and earned the second star, while Taylor Hustead got the first star with his two goals. Geoff Smith also recorded two assists for the Red and White.
