Miami's Newest Individual Conference Champions
Our Hawks of the Week for this week are the four Miami athletes who won individual conference championships this week at their respective conference meets. They are swimmer Paul Ricard and track and field athletes Margarita Pogorelov, Laura Neufarth, and Kristina Bolterstein.
Paul won the 1650 freestyle event at the combined MAC/Sun Belt championships last week with an NCAA B-cut time of 15:21.17, which also set a new MAC/Sun Belt record for the event. His winning time was also eleven seconds faster than his best time in the event this season. Paul, a senior, has now won the conference title in the 1650 free for three consecutive seasons and finishes his Miami career with six conference titles.
Margarita won the 60 meter dash at last weeks MAC women's indoor championships with a time of 7.50 seconds, a time that represent the fastest in the event for any MAC athlete this season. She also finished second in the 200 meter run.
Laura won the 5000 meter run with a season best time of 16:52.77. This is Laura's second MAC title of the 2007-08 academic year as she also won the MAC cross country title in the fall.
Kristina won the high jump with a winning height of 5-11 1/4. This is the third consecutive year that Kristina, a senior, has won the MAC indoor high jump championship.
