Laura Markwood
Our final Hawk of the Week for the fall semester is senior women's basketball forward Laura Markwood. In Miami's two wins last week, Laura had 16 points on 7-12 shooting and 27 rebounds. On Saturday versus Youngstown State, Laura had a double-double with 12 points, 20 rebounds, and four steals. Her 20 rebound effort represents the first time a Miami player had 20 rebounds in a game in nine years, since 1998.
For the season, Laura leads the Mid American Conference in rebounds with 103, or an average of 11.4 per game - almost three rebounds per game better than the second ranked player. Her 11.4 rebounds per game is also good for seventh nationally. Additionally, Laura is tied for fourth in the MAC with 19 steals this season.
Miami's women's basketball team has started the season 6-3 and has won three games in a row. The RedHawks finish up their pre-holiday schedule with home games versus Illinois State (with a 7-1 record and "also receiving votes" in the national polls) and IUPUI (at team Miami already beat in Oxford this season - as part of the WNIT).
