Laura Neufarth and Pat Sovacool
Our new co-Hawks of the Week are women's cross country runner Laura Neufarth and men's cross country runner Pat Sovacool. Both Laura and Pat won their respective 5k races this past weekend, and both runners have each won the two races they have entered in this young season.
Laura won the Queen City 5K Invitational in West Chester on Saturday with a time of 18:09, which was 16 seconds faster than the second place competitor. Also, Laura's time was 11 seconds faster than her winning time the previous week. Her perfomance led Miami to a second place finish (out of seven schools) at the race, ahead of Xavier and Ohio State among others. For the year, Laura has won both races she has entered, with her first victory coming in the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge. Miami as a team won the Flyer Challenge over local rivals such as UC, Xavier, and UD.
Pat finished first at the Great American Legends Race at Purdue with a time of 25:20, more than a minute faster than the nearest non-Miami runner. This victory was a follow up to Pat's victory in a meet-record time of 15:02 at last week's Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge, which led Miami to its fifth consecutive win at the Flyer Challenge. At this meet, Miami defeated schools such as UD, UC, and Xavier.
The women's cross country team continues its season at the Cedarville Invitational on Saturday while the men's season continues at the end of September at the George Mason Invitational. The MAC Championships for both teams will take place on October 27th at Mount Pleasant, MI.
