Paul Boyer, Tamara Long, and Kathryn Fennig
Our new Hawks of the Week are Paul Boyer, Tamara Long, and Kathryn Fennig, students in business, the social sciences, and the humanities who have been awarded for their outstanding work.
Boyer, a Sylvania native and junior supply chain management major, was one of six students nationwide to receive an R. Gene Ritter Scholarship. The Ritter Scholarships, awarded annually by the Institute of Supply Chain Management, go to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in the field and exceptional ethics and professional promise. In addition to his scholarship, the Ritter program has given Boyer a professional mentor--the senior vice president of Hilton Hotels, Anthony Nieves.
Tamara Long, a master's student in educational psychology from Seattle, was one of five students nationwide to receive a minority student scholarship from the National Association of School Psychologists. Long, who got her bachelor's degree from Seattle University in 2006--once a Redhawk, always a RedHawk!--is the first student from any Ohio university ever to win the scholarship. After graduation, she plans to work as a school psychologist in an inner-city school.
Finally, Kathryn Fennig, a 2007 graduate with degrees in Spanish and linguistics who comes from Mozambique via Springfield, was the 2007 recipient of Miami's Goldman Prize, awarded annually to a graduating senior to "realize a dream," will give Fennig a $26,000 stipend to spend ten months in Mozambique, where she lived from birth to age 13, studying the difficulty of learning the Ndau language as an adult. Ndau is believed to be one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn after childhood, but no one quite understands why. Fennig, a member of Miami's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, intends to write two scholarly articles and a manual to help people learn Ndau during her stay.
