Hongcai Zhou and Jack Temple Kirby
Our first two summer Hawks of the Week are not students, but professors. We kick off our annual series with Hongcai Joe Zhou, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, and Jack Temple Kirby, the W.E. Smith Professor of History Emeritus.
Dr. Zhou took his Ph.D. at Texas A&M and worked as a postdoc at Harvard before joining the Miami faculty in 2002. In May of 2007, his research group received a $1.44 million grant from the Department of Energy to solve the problem of hydrogen storage. One of the most daunting obstacles in the path of a change from America's "petroleum economy" to a "hydrogen economy" is safely storing hydrogen fuel in automobiles. Dr. Zhou and his group, which includes a number of Miami undergraduate and graduate students, will explore a storage method inspired by hemoglobin, the molecule that transports oxygen in the bloodstream. Dr. Zhou's group is one of five grant recipients nationwide, joining Argonne and Sandia National Laboratories, the University of Hawai'i, and United Technologies Research Group.
Jack Temple Kirby came to Miami in 1965 after finishing his Ph.D. in one short year. He retired from teaching in 2002 and now lives in Florida. It was in 2007, though, that he received his highest honor. On April 20, Columbia Univerity announced that Dr. Kirby's 2006 book Mockingbird Song: Ecological Landscapes of the South was one of the year's two winners of the Bancroft Prize, an award second only to the Pulitzer Prize for books written in the field of American history. The Bancroft jurors said Mockingbird Song was "beautifully written" and praised Dr. Kirby's ability to "reflect[] profoundly on the relationships of Americans--and humankind--to the natural world."
