Hawks of the Year - Tim Pollitz and Kathleen Vistica

Throughout the 2006-07 season, we have witnessed great achievements by many of Miami’s student athletes.  However, two student athletes stand above the rest and have been named the 2006-07 miamihawktalk.com Hawks of the Year.  They are junior basketball forward Tim Pollitz and senior soccer forward Kathleen Vistica.

Tim Pollitz had a breakout year in 2006-07, leading Miami basketball in points (16.1 PPG), minutes played (35.3 per game), field goal percentgae (57.4%), and offensive rebounds (63).  After starting the season slowly, Tim scored in double digits in 29 of Miami’s last 30 games, including a season (and career) high 25 points twice - against Toledo on January 27th and OU on March 8th.  Tim seemed to improve with every game this season, as he scored at least 20 points in 10 of Miami’s last 16 games.  In recognition of his outstanding regular season, Tim was named to the All-MAC First Team.

In possibly the best post-season performance of any Miami athlete this season, Tim led Miami to the MAC tournament title (the only conference tournament title for any Miami sport this year) with a three day performance that will be remembered for a long time by Miami fans.  In wins versus OU, Toledo, and Akron, Tim averaged 22 points per game on 76% shooting, while playing 115 of a possible 120 minutes - a performance that earned Tim the tournament MVP award.  In the semifinal win versus Toledo, Tim set a Miami record by shooting 92% (11-12) from the field.  He followed up this performance in Cleveland with 21 points on 8-11 shooting versus Oregon in the NCAA tournament.

Kathleen Vistica started her senior season with a goal and an assist in Miami’s 2-1 double overtime victory versus Morehead State, and she never slowed down.  Kathleen ended the season leading Miami in goals (9) and points (24), both career highs, with her point total also leading the MAC.  Two of Kathleen’s goals were game winners and she had multiple goal games twice, versus Northern Colorado and Buffalo.  Based on her outstanding season, Kathleen was named the 2006 MAC Player of the Year.

Just as impressive as her on-the-field performance was Kathleen’s work in the classroom.  Kathleen, an accountancy major, had a 3.95 GPA and was named a First Team Academic All American, the only Miamian to earn that distinction this year.  She was also named to the All-MAC Academic Team and the Academic All-District team for the second consecutive year.

While Tim and Kathleen are our Hawks of the Year, there were a number of outstanding candidates for both the men and women.  Honorable mention for the men goes to swimmer Paul Ricard (MAC Swimmer of the Year) and ice hockey’s Nathan Davis (second team West All-American).  Honorable mention for the women go to high jumper Kristina Bolterstein (All American), basketball’s Amanda Jackson (first team All-MAC), and swimmer Karen Frazier (first team All-MAC).

Congratulations to Tim and Kathleen on being named our 2006-2007 Hawks of the Year!
