Miami's Winter and Spring Sports All-MAC Academic Performers
As Miami's athletic year concludes, we thought it would be a good idea to recognize those Miamians who excelled both in the classroom and on the playing field. In that spirit, we would like to honor the 19 men and women from the winter and spring sports who earned a place on their sports' respective All-MAC Academic team (we honored the 10 fall athletes in December).
Four men from the swimming and diving team were named to the All-MAC Academic team. Heading this list is Paul Ricard, one of two Miami swimmers named to both the All-Academic team and the All-MAC first team. Paul maintained a 3.30 GPA in political science during a season where he won three MAC swimming titles, competed in the NCAA national meet, and was named MAC Swimmer of the Year. The other swimmer named to both the all-Academic team and the All-MAC first team is Nick DuPuis, who holds a 3.53 GPA in communication and management. The other honorees are divers Ryan Reinke (3.94 GPA in mechanical engineering) and Eric Teske (3.82 GPA in exercise science and health studies).
The women's swimming and diving team also had four honorees. They are Kristen Bezier (3.29 GPA in finance), Kathryn Stephens (3.34 GPA in exercise science), Allison Stevens (3.89 GPA in journalism), and Melissa Roemmele (3.94 in linguistics). Kristen and Kathryn were both conference runners-up this season, Kristen in the 100 breast and Kathryn in the 100 butterfly. Allison won 15 events during the season, and was named the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week in January. The only Miami diver honored, Melissa won nine events this season.
The men's track and field team had seven All-MAC Academic performers, the most of any Miami team. They are Tom Herrman (3.26 GPA in political science), Rob Prechti (3.48 GPA in exercise and health studies), Dan Beach (3.50 GPA in finance), Michael Veatch (3.37 GPA in physical education), Alex Boiwka (3.87 GPA in zoology), Kevin Silver (3.73 GPA in business), and Pat Sovacool (3.50 GPA in zoology). Tom (high jump), Michael (steeplechase), and Pat (1500 meters) were NCAA regional qualifiers for Miami this season. Pat was also an All-MAC Academic honoree in the fall as part of the cross country team.
Softball had one honoree, catcher Natalie Savonna. Natalie is an exercise science major and she has a 3.55 GPA. She started 43 games this season and had a career high in hits for the RedHawks.
Miami's baseball team also had one honoree, second baseman Evan Armitage. Evan is a mechanical engineering major and has a GPA of 3.68. He played in all 56 games this season (only one of three RedHawks to do so) and led the team with seven triples.
Miami's honoree from the tennis team is Linda Jirouskova, who has a 3.95 GPA in diplomacy and foreign affairs. Linda competed in 23 singles matches and 22 doubles matches for Miami this season.
Miami's final All-MAC Academic honoree is high jumper Kristina Bolterstein. Kristina is a zoology major and maintains a 3.55 GPA. She was also named to the all-MAC second team this season and was an NCAA regional qualifier in the high jump.
Also of note, hockey's Nathan Davis (majoring in American studies/political science) was Miami's nominee for CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the year (each school nominates one player).
The athletes we cheer all year long are attending Miami primarily for the opportunity to receive a superior education as well as for the opportunity to continue their athletic careers. We offer our congratulations to these Miamians from the winter and spring sports who have managed to excel both on the playing field and in the classroom.
