Jeff Zatkoff
Our new Hawk of the Week is ice hockey goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. Jeff got the start in Miami’s first round NCAA tournament game versus New Hampshire and led Miami to its first NCAA hockey tournament win ever with an outstanding 43 save performance as Miami beat UNH 2-1. Jeff made 43 saves out of 44 shots (.977 save percentage) against the top scoring team from Hockey East (3.6 goals per game). He also held New Hampshire, with the second best power play in Hockey East, scoreless in seven power play opportunities (16 shots). Unfortunately, Miami was denied its first ever trip to the Frozen Four with its 4-0 loss to Boston College. Jeff started that game as well, making 29 saves out of 33 shots. For his two games in the NCAA tournament, Jeff made 72 saves out of 77 shots (for an excellent .935 save percentage).
For the season, Jeff - a sophomore who was drafted last year in the third round by the Los Angeles Kings - finished 14-8-3 with a goals against average of 2.26 (2nd in the CCHA) and a save percentage of .919 (3rd in the CCHA). In addition to his stellar play for Miami, Jeff was selected to play on the United States’ team at the World Junior Championships played last December/January.
We congratulate Jeff on his fine effort for the RedHawks in the NCAA hockey tournament as well as for his outstanding 2006-07. Because of his outstanding weekend, and overall fine season, Jeff Zatkoff is our Hawk of the Week.
