Paul Ricard
Our newest Hawk of the Week is swimmer Paul Ricard. Paul, a junior, had arguably one of the best performances of any Miamian this season, with three individual titles at the MAC 2007 Swimming and Diving Championships this past week.
Paul's first title came in the 500 freestyle, where he repeated as conference champion. His time of 4:21.54 set a new MAC, Miami, conference meet, and pool record, and was almost five seconds better than his previous personal best. The time was also below the NCAA "B" cut for the 500 freestyle. Paul is currently ranked 13th in the nation in this event.
Paul's second MAC title came in the 200 freestyle. This was Paul's first MAC title at this distance, and he set a new personal best during the victory. Paul's third MAC title (and fifth overall in his Miami career) came in the 1,650 freestyle. Paul's time of 15:11.56 broke his own Miami record and was below the NCAA "B" cut. Overall, this time represents the eight fastest 1,650 freestyle time in the nation this season.
Paul's three conference titles and success all season led to his being named the MAC Swimmer of the Year, making Paul the first Miami man this season to be named the conference performer of the year. This is a repeat win for Paul, as he was also the MAC Swimmer of the Year last season.
