Karen Frazier
Our new Hawk of the Week is freshman swimmer Karen Frazier. Karen competed in five events this week as Miami placed third at the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
In her first conference meet, Karen won Miami's only individual MAC title with her victory in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:03.70 was the second fastest in program history, trailing only her own record setting time from earlier this season. Karen also swam the second leg for Miami's two other MAC titles, the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay. Miami's times in both relays set new school records, while the time of 1:44.11 in the 200 also set a new MAC record. Karen also finished as conference runner up in both the 200 IM, where her time was the eighth fastest in program history, and the 200 breaststroke where her time was the second fastest in Miami history.
During Miami's undefeated regular season, Karen had 11 dual meet victories for the Redhawks, ranking among the team leaders. She also set a new Miami record in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA "B" time of 1:03.41 and was named the MAC Swimmer of the Week twice during the season. As a capstone to her season, Karen was named to the All-MAC First Team - one of three Miamians to be honored as first teamers.
While certainly disappointed with the third place finish at the MAC Championships, Miami's women's swimming and diving team had a very successful season, going undefeated with a 12-0 mark - the program's first unbeaten regular season since 1977.
