Matt Christie and Alec Martinez
Our co-Hawks of the Week for the week ending February 11th are forward Matt Christie and defenseman Alec Martinez from Miami's hockey team. Matt and Alec led Miami to a weekend sweep of Lake Superior State (4-1 Friday and 3-2 Saturday), earning Miami a first round bye in the upcoming CCHA playoffs. On Friday, Matt and Alec both scored a goal for Miami while on Saturday Matt had a goal and an assist, and was named the game's first star. Alec also had an assist on Saturday. For the weekend, Alec finished at a +5 and Matt finished at a +3.
Miami hockey finishes up the regular season with a non conference series versus Robert Morris this weekend and a road trip to Northern Michigan the following weekend. After that, Miami begins the CCHA playoffs and hopefully the NCAA tournament. The consensus opinion is that Miami needs at least 6 points over its final four games plus an appearance in the CCHA semifinals to receive the NCAA bid.
We congratulate Matt and Alec on leading Miami to its first weekend sweep since December and starting the final push toward the playoffs with four points. For your outstanding weekend, Matt and Alec, you are our Hawks of the Week.
