Women's Swimming and Diving
We don't usually choose an entire team as our Hawk of the Week; however, the extraordinary regular season the women's swimming and diving team has just completed clearly merits such recognition. With victories over Bowling Green and Kenyon this weekend, Miami completed its 2006-07 regular season with an undefeated 12-0 record, the program's first undefeated season since 1977. The perfect overall record included a 7-0 record in MAC competition, giving Miami its sixth consecutive undefeated MAC schedule, winning 46 straight MAC dual meets.
Unofficially, 14 different Miami swimmers and divers won individual races during the course of the season. Among the statistical leaders of the team were freshman Karen Frazier (11 wins), sophomore Allison Stevens (14 wins), and seniors Margaret Patrick (11 wins) and Ashley Seymour (11 wins). Miami also achieved the best time/score in the MAC this season in six disciplines - 50 freestyle (Margaret Patrick), 100 breaststroke (Karen Frazier), 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, and both the 3 meter and 1 meter dives (Alex Enriquez). Karen Frazier also had the only Miami time under the NCAA "B" cutoff, in the 100 breaststroke.
The swimming and diving team has two weeks before they compete once again, in the 2007 MAC Championships in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Last season, EMU defeated Miami to win the 2006 MAC title, snapping Miami's streak of four straight MAC titles. With their undefeated regular season behind them, we're sure that the team is intent on reclaiming the MAC title this year.
