Miami's Fall Sports All-MAC Academic Performers
As the fall semester and another finals week concludes, we thought it would be a good idea to honor Miami's finest student-athletes from the fall sports, the 10 athletes who earned a place on their sports' respective All-MAC Academic team.
Kathleen Vistica, a former Hawk of the Week, heads this list as the soccer star was not only named to the All-MAC Academic team, but she was also named a first team Academic All American. Kathleen, who was also the 2006 MAC Player of the Year, is an accountancy major with a 3.95 GPA. Two other Miami soccer players joined Kathleen on the All-MAC Academic team - Katie Boyd, a special education major with a 3.31 GPA who led the team in assists, and Danielle Hays, an arts and science major with a 3.73 GPA.
The field hockey team was the other fall sport with three members on the All-MAC Academic team. The honored athletes were Deb Leighton (architecture - 3.26 GPA), Laura Seidel (integrated English language arts education - 3.45 GPA), and Danielle Gaynor (management and organization/sports studies - 4.0 GPA). Laura was second in the conference with nine assists.
The women's cross country team had two members on the All-MAC Academic team. Jennie Stoll is an early childhood education major with a GPA of 3.66 and Sarah Henize is a zoology major with a 3.63 GPA. Sarah was also the only Miami cross country athlete honored as MAC Runner of the Week during the season.
The men's cross country program provided Miami's only male All-MAC academic performer in Pat Sovacool, a zoology major with a 3.41 GPA. Pat was also Miami's top finisher at the conference meet.
The final All-MAC Academic team member is volleyballer Carli Reihman. Carli is an exercise science major with a pre-medicine focus and she has a 3.5 GPA. Carli was also named to the All-MAC second team this season.
The athletes we cheer all year long are attending Miami primarily for the opportunity to receive a superior education as well as for the opportunity to continue their athletic careers. We offer our congratulations to the 10 Miamians from the fall sports who have managed to excel both on the playing field and in the classroom.
