Danielle Perrecone
Our first Hawk of the Week for the 2006-07 year is field hockey senior midfielder and forward Danielle Perrecone. During the opening weekend of the RedHawks’ season, Perrecone stood out for Jill Reeve’s squad. In a 3-1 victory against Northwestern on Saturday--a team that beat Miami 5-0 last year--she scored the first goal at Miami’s newly remodeled field hockey facility, and she assisted on the game-winning goal. In Sunday’s 4-3 overtime heartbreaker against William & Mary, she assisted on the first goal of the game. With four points, Perrecone leads the team in this young season. But her opening goal against Northwestern wasn’t just Miami’s first of the season: it is also a symbol of how far the RedHawks have come. Perrecone is one of three seniors on the team, a group that spent their first two years in Oxford riding out 2-16 and 1-17 campaigns, and it is only fitting that she should score the first goal at the new Miami Turf Field. Last year, the first with Reeve as Head Coach, the RedHawks made the MAC championship game for the first time ever, and this season, with a brand new field and a youth-filled team, Miami is the preseason favorite to win the MAC. For her outstanding performance and the symbolic importance of her accomplishments this weekend, we here at MHT would like to congratulate Danielle Perrecone, the Hawk of the Week.
