Miami proved they were worthy of the number one ranking they received and carried throughout the season, taking the 2014 National Championship with a 3-1 win over UMass.
Miami went wire-to-wire, starting the season as the number one ranked team and capturing the National Championship with a 3-1 victory over UMass on Sunday.
Tournament MVP Kaley Mooney scored a five-on-three powerplay goal to give Miami a two goal advantage halfway through the second period that served as the additional insurance for the Redhawks win.
Miami opened the scoring with a pair of goals from Cassidy Guthrie and Jordan Hanson in the first with Mooney’s insurance marker coming after UMass had cut the lead to one.
It was a game highlighted by special teams as Hanson and Mooney each tallied on the powerplay and UMass’ lone goal coming from Siobhan Elvin’s shorthanded tally just 2:08 into the second period. Despite allowing a pair of goals, UMass’ shorthanded unit was dangerous, creating a number of counterattack opportunities thanks to strong goaltending from Chelsea Correll and an opportunistic forward group.
