Most Recent Story: Andy Katz Gets It Backwards
In his “Insider” column on ESPN.com today, Andy Katz notes that the SEC is considering extending its conference schedule by a couple of games. Given the recent (and completely idiotic, but that’s another story) proposals to do the same in the MAC, that’s noteworthy. But then Katz uncorked this gem: “The SEC coaches discussed playing 18 games instead of 16 during their spring meetings in Destin, Fla., but nothing was finalized. A few coaches have concerns about the price gouging of nonconference games with some low and mid-majors wanting $80,000 to $100,000 for a guarantee game.”
Who is Andy Katz kidding? Using the term “price gouging” to describe the mid-majors’ attempt to use whatever feeble market power they have is probably the most ridiculous misappropriation of an economic concept we’ve seen all year, and it’s a near certainty that legendary Miami economics professor Jerry Miller would strangle him for it. After all, a league that rakes in BCS cash hand over fist, set a going rate of $200,000 for the “signing rights” to football linemen, and has seen schools stuff almost that much cash in overnight express envelopes for basketball recruits can probably pay the mids and stay out of...
