Most Recent Story: It's Not "Hoosiers;" It's a Harbinger of New Day in College Hoops
The national media today has been quick to compare George Mason to the gritty high school team featured in "Hoosiers", but we’re not buying it.
It’s all too easy to fill up ten column inches or four hours of air time talking about the 1980 Olympic hockey team or Buster Douglas, but doing so glibly glosses over the plain fact that, for most of the year, George Mason was the best team in the DC area, as measured by the RPI. Better than Georgetown. Better than George Washington. And, far, far better than Gary Williams’s whiny band of underachievers in College Park.
It’s also woefully ignorant of college basketball history. We can still remember Penn’s run to the Final Four in 1979, including the memorable “Black Sunday” down in Raleigh, when both Duke and Carolina were eliminated on essentially home turf. We also remember Bo Kimble’s Loyola Marymount team and how close Kent State came to pulling this off just a couple of years ago. But talking about “miracles” must be easier than admitting that you have woefully under-covered a really good basketball team.
