:: Mary Lyon Hall

This residence hall on Western Campus has absolutely nothing to do with Miami athletics -- unless you count that hockey players Dan Daikawa (D) and Sean Penn (F) and the former voice of RedHawk Hockey, Bob Rotruck, lived there in 1991-92.

Rather, this diminutive hall is simply where one Steve Gentle lived for two years in the early 90s. (He would have lived there a third year, had the Western College Program not kicked out non-Western majors after the 1991-92 school year, but that's neither here nor there.)

Anyway, more than Miami Athletics, living in Mary Lyon was probably the single best experience of my Miami career. It is a small hall -- I don't know that we had more than 60 residents at any one time -- and it allowed the residents to foster close friendships and experience much of the informal learning that Miami's residential nature encourages.

Next time you're on campus, take a stroll by Mary Lyon for me. It's right across from the CPPO and behind Clawson Hall. Approach it from any of the three bridges, and you'll see why this little castle of a hall is so charming. And why Miami will always be more than just athletics to me.
