Favorite place on campus during my initial stint at Miami:
Millett Hall, because that's where Phil Lumpkin and Rich Hampton used to be the heart and soul of Miami basketball.
New favorite place(s):
Tough to choose between.....
(1) the Shriver Center Food Court, since that's where toasted rolls are now dispensed,
(2) The Hub, since that's where my Alumni Association Lifetime Membership brick is located, and
(3) The Goggin Ice Center, where The Brotherhood keeps those championship banners coming. _________________ It's "Miami University," plain and simple! For as long as the wind shall blow! |

What is it about Miami, really?
I can't be just one thing...
It starts with the campus architecture, the consistency of design, with the integration of purposeful exceptions and creativity. It has the order that OU lacks - It has the presence per community that OSU/and other city campuses lack - It has the landscape and terrain that BG and CMU and KSU greatly lack.
I don't want to oversell the Hub, Upham Arch, the toasted roll, the Triad... because I gues that other campuses have thier "things" But somehow, don't they increase the feeling at a different rate than other places because of our setting?
It has the size of enrollment in which you can choose to remain anonymous, or you can connect and thrive in multiple circles -
It is an intelligence filter. Everyone understands, that even with the vast array of personality and behavior styles of its enrollment - and the interpersonal conflict that may create... even if you don't care for someone, you know they had to kick ass to get in.
As the lead academic school in the MAC, and the traditionally leading athletic school in the MAC - with the rise of the Hockey program - Miamians are accustomed to a level of high expectation - which is not unlike that which the core Miami student has for themselves.
Most of us never work in that kind of environment for the rest of our lives - where such a high percentage of people have such high personal goals for themselves and others around them.
So my fav place on campus IS the campus. My wife didn't understand my loyalty until she first visited... with me... and when she saw my eyes water as we drove over the last hill on 73, and saw the steeples above the trees... she knew. _________________ Mel Knowlton '37- my friend

Love this thread.
I think just about every building/place has been mentioned so a couple of my favorite Miami situations:
-Walking down High Street onto Slant Walk in the early morning (6 am?) after a heavy snowfall, when there is no wind, it's still flurrying, and you are the only person in sight. The snow passing through the lamps, no footprints on the sidewalks, the eerie silence - that is my absolute favorite time to take in the campus. Made only better if the walk was an early morning trip for the first shift waiting in line at Goggin.
-Without fail, when the lights burst on and I hear "Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen and Welcome to Steve Cady Arena..." I get the most ridiculous smile on my face.
-Tacky as all hell, but everytime I make the turn at Pulley Tower onto 73, Shriver's "All roads" quote runs through my mind. |

Is it true that Pulley Tower cost $25M? That was the number that got bandied about when they built it. _________________ "Psycho was low on talent. Psycho was low on athleticism. Psycho can play on my team any day. Psycho has the biggest heart of any player I have seen."
