I'll second that BNANCs, Mac & Joes circa 1986, that is before it was remodeled. $1 for a giant draft Stroh's & 50cent slices at Bruno's made for a good $5 night out. _________________ "It's a dog eat dog world and I'm wearing Milkbone underwear" - Norm Peterson |

My favorite place on campus has to be the stone bridges on Western Campus in the Fall. It is beautiful.
Also nice is the view from the Hub into the Arch during the Fall.
Another fave is the attic of Reid Hall, an area our Greek Life Guide introduced us to as a place to drink in the dorm, and be loud and get away with it. There were beer cans that were probably 10 years old up there. You could only get to it by climbing up some wall mounted stairs in a janitors closet. |

That reminds me. You can add the Bishop Hall roof to my list. _________________ "Man, if I ever find out who let Northern Illinois and Buffalo into the league, they're in trouble."

Yes the Bishop hall roof was a nice place. I lived in 225 there, incidentally that same room burned a year later (I had nothing to do with it...really) _________________ Doing all I can to teach a cajun girl to love college hockey... |

I lived in 227 as a soph and in 203 (IIRC -- the corner room that opened onto the porch roof closest to Alumni Hall) as a senior. We kept a kiddie pool out on the balcony and used to sit out there in lawn chairs with our feet dipped in the pool watching the world go by, while fielding occasional calls from the architecture department asking us to turn down the stereo. _________________ "Man, if I ever find out who let Northern Illinois and Buffalo into the league, they're in trouble."

Yeah, Bruno's pizza had that really greasy "finish" to it.........and a real floppy kind of crust so that if you held it by the end it just hung there. But it was good!!!
Someone mentioned the Sundial......that is another neat spot. And coming back to South quad on the slant walk.........so many spots to choose from........makes me long for my good ol' college days at ol' MU! (sigh)
As for "watering holes"......we used to hang out in Darrtown at Red's place (The Post) and play that miniature bowling for beers......lotsa fun. Also, what was the place where Attractions now resides (upstairs bar with peanuts on the floor......can't believe I can't remember the name). We played a lot of fooseball in there.

Mary Lyon will always be Miami to me. We had three stone bridges converge in front of our front door. I had a corner room my junior year with three large windows -- complete with a view of Kumler Chapel -- and a private bathroom.
The fact that the old gray lady looked nothing like the rest of Miami made her special, but more than that, the people in the dorm made it home. The living room had more people hanging out at all hours than any other dorm on campus -- perhaps it was the fire that we often stoked in the fireplace during the winter; perhaps it was the bay windows that looked out on sunsets over the trees; perhaps it was because the couches were old enough to be comfortable and still study. But the point is, that building was home.
(And to make this sports-related, because Mary Lyon is a small dorm, we won at least one dorm participation contest for showing up at an athletic event. If we could get 30 people to a game, we had 50% participation...and easily win the contest!)
Some of my other fond spots at Miami:
1. The Academic Quad in October. The colors were so intense, and the smell of leaves was almost overwhelming.
2. The Bluffs on a cold, clear December night. It was tricky to get there, but the views of the sky were worth it.
3. The walk down to Goggin, as the hills in the distance behind the buidling disappeared, leaving only clear blue sky.
4. Alexander Dining Hall after a new snowfall. Alexander looks like a ski lodge, and looking out on a new snow through walls of glass makes it feel even more the part.
5. Sitting on a bench under the tower, eating a slice of brunos as my dinner during a summer evening, and just watching the people walk by.
6. The Arch at night under a full moon. It worked for me. |

You guys definitely hit the nail on the head with the reference to South Quad in springtime, or "Miami Beach" to some of us.
(Was it just me, or did there always seem to be an increase in the number of semis rolling through Oxford on Rt. 27 during the spring? Seriously, is Rt. 27 the quickest or the easiest way to get to anything? I always credited the spring "scenery" for the increase in Teamsters in the area.)
As for me, I always liked the view from the sundial out toward South Quad. If I remember correctly, SI did a article on Ron Harper his senior year, and took pictures of him from this vantage point.
Oh, and I'm still looking for the right girl to take out to visit the Upham arch. |

Hey Miami78, I was in Collins too. I remember our last night there, we went on the balcony and umm... well my roommate at the time still has the big letters saying Collins (we were blackmailed into giving the "HALL" to some other guys in the hall.
That is why Collins now has gold colored letters on the building, while the others all have black.
Of course, if any of this gets out... I will deny any knowledge of the situation _________________ 2005 - the year of Nan_e! |

Ironically, I met my "Miami" girl 11 years after graduating. After becoming a confirmed bachelor (with stints in LA, Denver, and Michigan), I met my future (and now present) wife at a friend's wedding in Ann Arbor in 1989.........she had gone to Miami, albeit 7 years after I did!
If you guys wonder why I refer to so many Miami games I went to long ago, it's not just 'cause I've been around awhile, but because I was single after graduating until I turned 34. That meant Miami "road games" at will, including the Cal Bowl, LSU, Purdue, and many more games both in Oxford and at other MAC venues. |

I had forgotten all about the Bluffs. Was it really illegal to be out there?

| Your right- what a great thread. Great to hear the story of exCK meeting Mrs. exCK and that "friend" of bnanc that had something to do with the mysterious disappearance of the Collins Hall letters- all unsubstantiated of course. The mental image of all the girls out tanning in South Quad- wow! Somebody early on said- to those of you still lucky enough to be there- treasure it- because damn does it sure go by fast. |

I think the park to the Bluffs closed after dark...but sometimes we would go anyway ;)
The snowfall comment was right on...although my favorite snow days were when the pond in front of Yager would freeze...pond hockey (until MUP would chase us out)! |

Pieffer (?) Park closed? That didn't apply to us! And the Bluffs surely were community property. In the early 70s everything was community property. _________________ Play the best, beat the best, be the best. |

As I recall, The Bluffs were only supposed to be open during daylight hours, but most of my visits there were at night.
And I will see about archiving this someplace appropriate. |

A little known favorite spot for me was the inside of Alumni Hall. For some reason, the inside of that old, creaky building inspired me to study. I used to go down in the basement there, where it was dank, dark, and quiet and read to my heart's content. Now, there are more architecture studios down there, but I loved that old building.
And walking down slat walk, past Harrison, between Elliot and Stoddard, through the Upham Arch, and across the woods to Bachelor -- man, it doesn't get any more collegiate and inspiring than that. My father (MU '63) and I took that walk together after the UC game. It's inspiring.
Never kissed my wife (MU '90) under the Upham Arch, though. Maybe I should. Will anyone admit to doing that? _________________ The "Culture of Champions" concept is not exclusively the responsibility of students and coaches ...but, rather, the "culture" to which we aspire contains a mind-set of every single person performing like a champion in everything we do |

Gosh RedSteve, why would anyone want to be out there in the day time? The only time I was ever there in the daytime was once when the sun came up. _________________ Play the best, beat the best, be the best. |

here is another of my favorite places on campus
on the south side of some building on central quad there was (still is?) a greenhouse
between that greenhouse and the next building was a narrow walk
somewhere along that narrow walk there were eight or ten stair steps to get up to the higher level of ground. they were narrow and tucked in between the buildings and made a great setting for photographs
anyone remember where that is? what buildings? _________________ Play the best, beat the best, be the best. |

| I believe the greenhouse was attached to Upham and the building on the other side of the walkway was Shiedler (Geology or Geography ... I forget which). |

| Upham and Gaskill are the two buildings; the greenhouse is part of Upham. |
