Alex is the kid that comes to your party, drinks your beer and gets so loaded he pisses on your floor and gropes your female guests ... and then, after you finally tell him to get the hell out, he complains to everyone that you are a crappy host.*
Alex has been asked over and over again to abide by some simple rules of decorum and he has steadfastly and flamboyantly refused to modify his behavior. It is absolutely true that the mods and Alex have honest differences of opinion about what the appropriate floor of decoum on a website should be. But, this is not Alex's sandbox. He doesn't make the rules. There was a time when I lobbied quietly for Alex to be reinstated (from a previous banning) as a gesture of good faith, but the result of that has been a trove of insults directed at other posters, athletes and administrators that were typically without any redeeming quality. As a result, I believe (but can't immediately substantiate) several longtime posters on this board have either deactivated or ceased posting. I honestly take no joy in seeing Alex banned, but I blame him for the banning and applaud the mods for their patience.
* This is an analogy, loaded with hyperbole. I do not intend claim that Alex actually pissed on your floor or molested women.

First they came for the communists...the socialists were in power in Germany at the time of the quote. The commies were the enemy of the socialists as they both struggled to control the means of production and had to do away with each other to sieze privately owned property. Actually several versons of this quote, but with the timing of history communist is belived to be the most likely version.
Now return you to your regularly schedulded program...
My preference is to liberate Alex. He has passion, often misguided but something we lack in aggregate. I don't see how excluding someone that cares from the community strengthens the communicty. I propose double secret probation but lets not make alex dead to us.
