One of the most engaging and amazing people to ever walk the campus. I'll never forget his History of Miami class, and thus will never forget him.
He was also my dad's academic advisor at Kent State in the early 60's. _________________ He's a demon on wheels... |

| Very sad. Paul Pearson was president of Miami University during my time as a student, but Dr. Philip Shriver was and will forever be everyone's president of Miami University. |

Dr. Shriver was the epitome of class and was a great leader of Miami during some very troubling times. During the "riots" during the Vietnam era, his steadiness not only served the university, but the entire Oxford community. _________________ "Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory." -- George S. My thoughts go out to the entire Shriver family. Dr. Shriver was a great man, there will never be anyone like him to grace Miami with their presence again. _________________ Scalp the S$!t out of that song, bring back signs, make it fun. Redskins Forever!!!! Bagel and Deli!!! Ron Tammen Lives!!!! |

Phil Shriver is a Miami legend. For many years he and Martha sat in front of me at the Old Goggin. I think my most memorable recollection would be the speech he gave to the student body at a jampacked Withrow Court shortly after the student takeover of the ROTC building and the teargassing and arrests of many students during Vietnam protests in 1970 (about a week prior to the Kent State shootings). When I think of a president of Miami University, Phil Shriver will always be the man who comes to mind. His family has always been the first family of Miami. _________________ Miami University...17 NCAA tournament appearances...4 Sweet 16's. |

I was fortunate enough to have him not only as the University President for all 4 years but I also took his 5 credit hour Oho history class. He exuded class, grace and dignity in every way. His passing is truly, truly a sad event.
A great man. |

Dr Shriver was always kind in passing in the halls to me or when running into him at Bob Evans or at a sporting event. I had the fortune to meet Dr Shriver at a dinner 11 years ago, and I was lucky enough to sit next to him for the night. Just a fantastic man who understood the Miami culture and the Miami way better than any person I've ever met.
My thoughts to his wife Martha, daughters Darcy, Carolyn, Susan, & Melinda, and son Scott right now. |

It is a sad day. I had little, if any, interaction with Dr. Shriver, but I feel like I knew him personally. he had a great impact on Miami and I know I will never forget his contributions. _________________ “If you don't have goals, you are just wandering around.” - Ryan Jones |

Relative to Miami itself, Dr. Shriver and Walter Havighurst have to be the most significant Miamians of the last century. _________________ Mel Knowlton '37- my friend

Those were intense and heated times in America. By 1970 most people realized that we were not going to win in Vietnam, in fact we were not really trying to win, but just kept sending guys over their to kill or be killed. Unlike modern wars, every male Miamian was subject to the draft once student deferments were done away with, depending on a number you drew out of a lottery. President Nixon wanted an honorable way to end the war, by this time most young peole just wanted any way to end the war. We had guys coming back from Vietnam and telling us what a ridiculous situation it had become and by 1970 few were willing to go and put their lives on the line for nothing.
When Nixon announced troop increases, that kind of blew the lid off of everything that Spring, and Miami, then Ohio State, and finally Kent State all erupted in ever increasing clashs and violence.
After a "fairly radical" group of Miami students took over the ROTC building (a sitin) the Ohio National guard and Butler County police were called to Oxford and they were dragging people out by their hair and trying to do it as painfully as possible and started teargassing everybody outside the building when people started yelling at them. This led to a long night of incidents.
Shriver's speech following these incidents had a pep rally type of atmosphere and his basic message (as near as I can remember after all these years) was that we were a University and we needed to hold onto that and their would be an emphasis in all the classes to discuss the war and options of what could be done through the system and he asked us to work through the university and not tear it apart. _________________ Miami University...17 NCAA tournament appearances...4 Sweet 16's. |

The thing I was always impressed with in regards to Dr. Shriver is summed up simply: students listen to university presidents because they more or less have to. Dr. Shriver listened to students because he wanted to...and he always wanted to. _________________ Season ticket holder football and hockey since 1995
