Liberty moving to FBS
| Quote: | | But in the six years that Jeff Barber has been the school’s athletics director, the growth of facilities on campus has been nothing short of stunning. Williams Stadium expanded to 19,200 seats and now features a state-of-the-art press tower, rather than the trailer-like building that served as a press box for more than 20 years. There are plans to expand the stadium to 30,000 seats in the near future. |

| Quote: | | The power conferences, of course, are out of play for a program looking to make the leap between subdivisions. That leaves Liberty with only a few realistic options, most prominently the Sun Belt Conference and the Mid-American Conference. |

I'm not a fan of Liberty joining the MAC, either. But check out their FB facility -- pretty darn nice.

The Flames Sports Network has some serious media muscle behind it and would be a great asset to whichever conference Liberty lands. In their press conference they said they would bring it to the table to the conference. I'm surprised Karl Benson of the Sun-Belt isn't all over this. Liberty alone has more coverage then the entire Sun-Belt Conference. Flames Network is national and is the same size as CBS Sports Network and NBC Sports Network and not much smaller than ESPNU. They are the BYU or Notre Dame of FCS. ESPN3 also chooses to air their games regularly.
QUOTE:
The Flames Sports Network (FSN) is comprised of Liberty’s radio and television networks and has covered Flames’ athletics ... The Flames Sports Network has broadcasted in over 30 states, and travelled outside the continental United States to areas such as Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
The Flames Sports Network expanded its outreach during the 2003-04 season with the addition of television coverage for home men’s and women’s basketball games, as well as volleyball matches. FamilyNet and the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) have joined the football network, representing 40 million additional households coast-to-coast.
The FSN’s television broadcast team consists of trained professionals who have worked for most of the major sporting networks in the United States, including ESPN, ABC Sports, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, NASCAR, SportSouth, Comcast and FoxSports.

That is a great stadium, and in a few years capacity will be larger than ours. It also seems that their attendance just continues to grow, with many games above what we get in the stands. I would not shut down Liberty entirely as it looks like they are making big strides

I agree, they have the money, desire, fan support, and media to blow right by the MAC when they get in an FBS conference. They are already on par with the MAC in facilities and attendance. And they did all this since they were founded in only 1971 which is about 150 years after the MAC schools. Liberty should get a look. _________________ THOSE WHO STAY WILL BE CHAMPIONS! |

Those facts and numbers certainly indicate an almost nationwide presence for the network, but that doesn't mean large numbers of people are actually watching it. |

| Back to VCU joining the A-10. Much is always made about TV markets being added, etc... In this case, VCU is in Richmond, which of course is already represented in the A-10 by the Richmond Spiders. So, it's sometimes about more than a new market. Obviously VCU has some current cache, but over time that may not last. |

I've said it before, I'll say it again ... I think you people underestimate the potential of VCU. It is the biggest university in the state. It has a solid reputation in several academic areas (most notably the best public arts school in the country) and is up-and-coming in many others. They have done a lot of building over the last 10 years. They are an inner-city school with huge amounts of fans within a short drive of campus. They have virtually no competition in the local market from any professional team in any sport (the closest you could say would be the Flying Squirrels, a AA baseball team). The community identifies with VCU far more than they do with UofR. VCU also has terrific support at the local and state governmental level. If VCU basketball were a stock, I be buying. _________________ Franchising accounts for 15.3% of the jobs in the U.S. private sector. (Source: Economic Impact of Franchised Businesses)

I agree Maz. VCU will have staying power. That is not a small school.
OTOH, Florida International is a big school too...and they are terrible at sports. |

Isn't FIU one of those schools with a large enrollment but few traditional students?
VCU is a school that definitely has the resources to make some moves in college sports. _________________ I don't read literature. I read literary criticism. |

Old Dominion to Conference USA in 2013-14
| Quote: | Old Dominion has scheduled a press conference for 2:30 p.m. Thursday and, according to David Teel of the Daily Press, the school will announce that it is moving to Conference USA.
Reports indicate that this move is driven by the football program, which would make the move to FBS to join C-USA.
The Monarch football team finished 10-3 last season and ended the season ranked 10th in the FCS.
The move would not be immediate for Old Dominion, which would reportedly wait until 2013-14 to switch conferences. This stands in contrast to Virginia Commonwealth, which will be moving to the A-10 immediately.
Conference USA will end up with 14 schools, now that Memphis, Central Florida, Houston, and Southern Methodist are leaving for the Big East, and the conference is bringing in Old Dominion, Charlotte, North Texas, Florida International, Louisiana Tech, and Texas-San Antonio. |

If ODU is good enough for CUSA... then Toledo, Ohio and Miami all are.
CUSA may not be a good place for Miami forever, but it sure as hell has to be better then where the MAC is headed. You can either be part of the future, or be left behind, and the MAC is being out flanked in every sport at every school. The leadership of this conference is abysmal, and staying the course and not acting decisively has paralyzed all of the insitutions. _________________

QUOTE:
And while the MAC is not currently reaping the great financial TV rewards of other leagues, Steinbrecher hints even that could be changing, because it is not exclusively about markets when it comes to landing TV contracts.
“We have a brand, and TV is buying brands,” Steinbrecher said. “Markets certainly play a part, but at the end of the day, it's about brands. Was the Big East interested in Boise State for its TV market or for its football brand?”
Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said league expansion will be one of the topics of discussion.
Steinbrecher said, “We'll continue to talk about membership, which is as far as I will go with that statement.”

On ODU ... another large public school in a pretty large TV market, without much in the way of competition. No professional sports at the highest level (although they do have a number of minor league teams) to compete for butts in the seats. The closest FBS competition in the state would be UVa or VT several hours away. (Although, let's be clear, VT owns that market in terms of eyeballs on TV.) Outside the state, I guess ECU might be fairly close, but that border means something down there. It is a terrific recruiting area, so they could benefit from that.
On the downside, the campus is a dump. And that's being kind. They have a ways to go, but I think their BB team probably has more success sooner that the FB team. _________________ Franchising accounts for 15.3% of the jobs in the U.S. private sector.
