| Looking at his line, I thought he must be a scrappy player...and he is. |

McKenzie earns scholarship.
| Quote: | Penticton Vees winger Curtis McKenzie has signed on the dotted line.
McKenzie, 17, has accepted a scholarship offer with Miami University of Ohio.
The scholarship begins in the 2009-2010 season, although McKenzie does have the option to defer it until 2010-2011.
McKenzie has two assists in two games this season. In 49 games last season, he picked up three goals and 10 points. |

Apparently chose NCAA over the WHL.
| Quote: | The Vees also lost defenceman James Bettauer to the WHL‘s Chilliwack Bruins and learned that forward Curtis McKenzie has decided to play a second season in Penticton instead of going to the Red Deer Rebels.
|
| Quote: | McKenzie, a six-foot-one 190-pounder from Golden, had three goals, 10 points and 81 PIM in 49 games with the Vees, impressing with his skill, grit and willingness to drop the gloves.
“Curtis can take another step in his game,” said Harbinson. “We‘re thinking about trying him at centre to start the season. If it doesn‘t work out, we can move him back to the wing. We think he‘s going to have a great season.”
|
Brent Sutter's (Red Deer owner/NJ Devils coach) take on McKenzie this summer before he opted against the WHL.
| Quote: | Sutter and the Rebels coaching staff (head man Jesse Wallin, assistant Dallas Gaume and goaltending instructor Andy Nowicki will run the camp) are especially eager to monitor the progression this weekend of 17-year-old forward Curtis McKenzie, a fifth-round pick in the 2006 bantam draft who played last season with the BCHL champion Penticton Vees.
McKenzie, a budding power forward at six-foot-one, 190 pounds, would be a welcome addition to the Rebels roster for the ‘08-09 season.
“We’re excited about seeing him here and sitting down with him,” said Sutter. “Obviously we have high hopes for him and we’re hoping he’ll want to be a Red Deer Rebel and commit to us. He’s a kid we’d love to have in Red Deer next season.” |
| Quote: | “I don’t like signing too many players too soon unless we know for sure that they can play for us at 16 (years of age) or for sure the next year,” said Sutter.
“I don’t want to hurt their (NCAA scholarship) eligibility if it turns out that they can’t play at the major junior level. I just won’t do that to kids. I don’t think it’s fair, I don’t think it’s right and I’m firm in that belief. The odd time someone will sign and it just doesn’t work out, but I do not believe you just go out and sign every player you draft.” |

| he didn't have stellar numbers last year, wonder who his style of play is akin to. he's a scrapper though, so maybe if he can work the crease and the corners, and add some weight, maybe we have another jones in the making? |

Didn't have great numbers last year but he was only 16. Has already met his goal total from last year so that is a great sign.
I'm guessing he's got some good upside for Miami to sign him as a 17 year old. If he was just a roster filler, you could take your pick from any unsigned 19/20 year old from the USHL/NAHL.

A nice article on C-Mac's commitment.
| Quote: | | “I flew down there last week and I really liked it,” said McKenzie, who has two assists in two games this season. “Nice facilities, great coaches, great teammates, great academics. They made me feel really comfortable and it’s the perfect spot for me.” |
| Quote: | | “I think my footspeed I really have to work on and around the net, burying pucks,” said McKenzie, who wasn’t sure if he would accomplish his childhood goal of earning a scholarship. “I just have to go out and make everyone a better player around me. I bring a good mix of leadership, I bring everything to the table that I can. I can play defensively, I bring some offence and I can bring a physical game as well.” |
| Quote: | “You definitely need guys who will go in there and take bodies and also can put a puck in,” explained Josepher. “You need a lot of dynamic forwards and C-Mac has a lot of good qualities and that’s what makes him such a good
hockey player.” |
Definitely does sound like a similar type player as Jones. |

I like that nickname, C-Mac. I am glad we got another Canadian coming to Miami. Perhaps, he is the next Ryan Jones? I will never forget my conversation face-to-face with Jones after the pre-season game last year in which there was a lot of "extra-curricular" hitting and scrappy play.
Jonesey said to me: "That's how hockey is played back home." Does anyone believe that there may be two NHL teams in Toronto in the next few years?
Lastly, I am glad our hockey team's exposure has stretched all the way to Western Canada! Perhaps, with all of the talent we get from the USCHL, BCHL, and other semi-pro leagues, I have overlooked just how far the "Miami" name has gone. _________________ http://andybailer.wordpress.com

| I saw a few OPJHL games years ago w/ a buddy that used to play in that league. Not too many checks go unfinished to say the least and the stick-work was absolutely brutal from what I remember...but they were wearing full-shields. Not sure if that league allows half-shields now or not, which may have cleaned up the stickwork. |

I think it's more a function of coach Brekke's ties, specifically w/ W. Canada and the BCHL. He recruited heavily there for Cornell. I'm sure Blasi and Bergeron have plenty of connections in Ontario since that is where they are from and there always seems to be a few Canucks on the roster every year.
With the talent the USHL produces these days though, I don't think the top teams need to recruit Canada as heavily as before...I could be wrong though. Just seems like teams are more American from what they were in the 80's/90's. |

BCHL has delivered quite a few guys to Gwoz in Denver so that's definitely a relatively untapped pipeline for us. Good to see us migrating that way. Kid looks like he could be a stud. _________________ Check out http://jacketsrequired.blogspot.com and follow @jacketsrequired on Twitter. |
