=>Here is the MHT.com Profile for Moeller's Griffin McKenzie:

http://www.miamihawktalk.com/home/recruits/player/8097/

I will have a RedHawk Insider story on him - had nice talk with his father during an AAU game - later on today or whenever Alex posts it.

=>Brian Snow of Musketeerscoop.com again updates the Ohio Top 20 for 2010 (07/17/08 ):

Article:

http://www.xavier.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=827724

Quotes of note from Article:

Quote:
After the two top players, who both reside on the interior, a pair of perimeter players really lead the way. They are Jordan Sibert and Juwan Staten. Sibert is an athletic shooting guard who can shoot it and get to the rim. His stock is soaring, and is now one of the most coveted players in the entire Midwest. Staten is committed to Dayton and the best point guard to come out of the state since Drew Lavender. Both Sibert and Staten are definite high-major talents.

***

After the top four, things begin to bunch up. The next five players all could emerge and separate themselves from the pack. J.D. Weatherspoon is the freak athlete who lacks ideal power forward size

***

Nick Kellogg is a tough player without a true position, and Griffin McKenzie is a big body who can shoot, but lacks athleticism and strength. If any of those five can emerge this class takes a big step up.

Once it gets to the 10 spot, a lot of players could become excellent mid-majors. Aaron Craft is the toughest player in the class, Ralph Hill has had a monster summer, and Jordan Hicks is a special two sport athlete.

***

Rankings:

http://xavier.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=2264

Known Miami Targets:

#3 Jordan Sibert - Miami offer

#5 J.D. Weatherspoon

#8 Nick Kellogg - Miami offer

#9 Griffin McKenzie - Miami offer

#10 Aaron Craft - Miami offer

#12 Jordan Hicks - Miami offer

Griffin Mckenzie takes an unoffcial.
Griffin Mckenzie, 6-foot-8, 2010, SF from Cincinnati Moeller visited Butler over the weekend. Butler has not offered Griffin, but with the likes of Notre Dame, Xavier, Stanford and Vanderbilt closing we imagine that will change soon. Griffin is in no hurry to make a decision yet.

=>Ya never know Nick. Last year, we were talking about 1 ship and had Mavunga in mind. Next thing you know, spring come around, and Miami has 3 commits!

Much can happen between now and the start of school in 2010.

I agree given the great strength we now appear to have in the frontcourt Smile we certainly need a guard, preferably PG with the lone 2010 scholarship.

=>Cincy Enquirer had it's H.S. preview today. Front page of Website's sports section has a big photo of Orlando Williams. Discussions of Williams, Allen Roberts, Jess Chadwell, Quinton Rollins, Jordan Hicks, Griffin McKenzie, and Bill Edwards.

Excerpts from various articles:

Quote:
For the 2008-09 season, area coaches see Greater Miami Conference teams Princeton and Middletown as the top two area Division I teams. The GMC last had a team upstate in 2004, when Hamilton won the state title.

Princeton returns three Division I college recruits in senior shooting guard Orlando Williams (Miami University), senior forward Marquis Horne (Ohio University) and junior wing Jordan Sibert (Ohio State).

Middletown returnees include senior guard Allen Roberts (Miami University) and reigning GMC player of the year Bill Edwards (uncommitted, but a probable Division I college recruit).

Moeller is ranked No. 3 and St. Xavier is No. 7 in the Enquirer preseason coaches' poll, but each team has concerns with inexperience and/or injuries. Moeller's top college prospect, 6-foot-9 Griffin McKenzie, is out probably into January with a stress fracture in his back. St. Xavier, like Moeller, lost most of its scoring production to graduation.

Quote:
Another top recruit is Middletown senior guard/forward Bill Edwards, who is garnering interest from Dayton, Miami University and Massachusetts, among others.

Edwards, who is 6-6, was the Greater Miami Conference player of the year last season. He averaged 16.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and was special mention all-state.

"He's a jack of all trades," Stovall said. "He can do a little bit of everything on the floor."

Middletown senior guard Allen Roberts, a Miami recruit, is another player who will be key for the Middies. The 6-2 Roberts averaged 15.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Despite all of Middletown's talent, the Middies aren't favored to win the GMC. That distinction goes to Princeton, which has three players committed to Division I schools.

Senior guard Marquis Horne (Ohio) averaged 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists and senior guard Orlando Williams (Miami) averaged 12.6 points and 3.8 rebounds.

***

Quinten Rollins, Wilmington: The junior averaged 16.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.9 steals. He was D-II special mention all-state.

***

Nate Brusman, Cincinnati Christian: The senior averaged 20.9 points, 4.9 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 rebounds.

Jess Chadwell, Georgetown: The junior averaged 17.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.9 assists.

***

Griffin McKenzie, Moeller: The 6-9 junior forward/center is one of the area's top Division I college prospects. He probably is out until January with a back injury.

Jordan Hicks, Lakota West: The junior, one of the nation's top linebacker prospects in football, averaged 14.4 points and 5.1 rebounds.

Games to watch

Here is a look at some of the area's top boys' basketball games to watch:

PRINCETON at LOVELAND

Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

These two teams should be among the area's elite in Division I. Loveland star forward Bobby Capobianco could miss this game as he is recovering from a foot injury. The Vikings are loaded with seniors Marquis Horne (Ohio) and Orlando Williams (Miami University) and junior Jordan Sibert (Ohio State).

LA SALLE at OAK HILLS

Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The West Side rivalry is renewed. Oak Hills won 55-49 at La Salle last season. The Highlanders are led by senior guard Alex Rogers, who has committed to Christian Brothers. La Salle is led by seniors Danny McElroy (Bowling Green) and Jordon Crawford (Ashland, Ohio).

TAFT at ST. XAVIER

Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

A good early-season test for both teams. The Bombers will be led by senior forward Erik Stenger. Taft returns nine varsity players, including post player Richard Harris, who averaged 19 points and 14 rebounds.

MOELLER at ST. XAVIER

Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

The Crusaders lost all five starters and several top reserves from last season. Sophomore forward/center Griffin McKenzie also is out with a back injury to start the season. St. X lost both games against Moeller last season.

ELDER at LA SALLE

Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Elder defeated La Salle twice last season, including a 71-18 thrashing at The Pit on Feb. 8.

MIDDLETOWN at PRINCETON

Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

This is probably the premier Greater Miami Conference game this season. Both teams are loaded with talent. Middletown returns senior guard/forward Bill Edwards (Division I prospect) and senior guard Allen Roberts (Miami University). Last season, the Middies defeated Princeton in the regular season before losing in the postseason.

Princeton boys coaches' pick
Vikings top Div. I area hoops poll; Taft holds No. 1 spot in Divs. II-IV

By Tom Groeschen • tgroeschen@enquirer.com • December 4, 2008

Princeton has made one Ohio boys' basketball state tournament appearance, a runner-up finish at the big-school level in 1972.

Could the Vikings make it back upstate in March? Many think so.

Princeton is a solid No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I preseason area coaches' poll, taking 16 of 18 first-place votes. Princeton also is the top-ranked Ohio team in regional preseason polls such as USA Today's and PrepNation.com's, both of which rate the Vikings No. 6 in the Midwest and No. 1 in Ohio.

"It's exciting to be considered on a national level like that, but I tell our kids we haven't even had a jump ball yet," Princeton coach Josh Andrews said. "I really feel we'll use it as a catalyst to our work ethic and approach."

Andrews was a Princeton assistant coach before being elevated to the head position in November 2007, when previous coach Bill Brewer died of a heart attack. Andrews, who turned 26 last month, guided last season's Vikings to an 18-6 record and a regional tournament appearance.

Princeton returns three Division I college recruits in senior Orlando Williams (Miami University), senior Marquis Horne (Ohio University) and junior Jordan Sibert (Ohio State).

Middletown, ranked No. 2 in the Enquirer Division I poll, returns several standouts, including 2008 Greater Miami Conference player of the year Bill Edwards (still open on colleges) and Allen Roberts (commited to Miami University).

GMC preview

It promises to be a memorable year at the top of the Greater Miami Conference, with loaded Princeton and Middletown as unanimous picks for the top two spots in the league.

Princeton and Oak Hills shared the GMC title last season, with Middletown just behind them. Both Princeton and Middletown feature multiple Division I college prospects in their lineups.

Lakota West, Mason and Oak Hills are given the best chances by the league's coaches for challenging the top two.

Teams listed in coaches' predicted order of finish:
PRINCETON

COACH: Josh Andrews (18-6)

LAST SEASON: 18-6 (12-2)

KEY PLAYERS: G Orlando

Williams, F Marquis Horne, F Stefon Johnson, G Jordan Sibert

OUTLOOK: A young Princeton team led by then-interim head coach Andrews fared remarkably well last season in overcoming the shocking loss just before the season of head coach Bill Brewer to a heart attack. The Vikings made it all the way to the regional semifinals, and with four talented starters back - including Division I pledges Williams (Miami University), Horne (Ohio University) and junior standout Sibert (Ohio State) - this is a team many see as a legitimate state title contender.

Horne (10.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Johnson (7.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg) give Princeton a pair of athletic

6-foot-6 interior players, while Williams (12.6 ppg) and Sibert (11.6 ppg, 40.3 percent 3-point shooting) excel on the wings. Guard Andy Baker, who saw 13 minutes of action per game last season off the bench, could complete the lineup.

"Our size and athleticism, along with great instincts, will create opportunities for defensive pressure from baseline to baseline," Andrews said.
MIDDLETOWN

COACH: Bob Ronai (48-62)

LAST SEASON: 15-8 (10-4)

KEY PLAYERS: F Bill Edwards, G Allen Roberts, G Tony Peters, F Anthony Strothers

OUTLOOK: With two returning players the quality of Edwards and Roberts, in most years, Middletown probably would be the preseason league favorite. The 6-6 Edwards (16.7 ppg, 10.2 rpg) was last year's GMC player of the year, while Roberts (15.8 ppg, 43.4 percent 3-point shooting) is a smooth shooter committed to play for Miami University.

Peters forms a fine complement to those two with some versatility on the wing. Sophomore Strothers, a 6-4 forward, could help with Ronai's biggest concern, which is Middletown's ability to rebound the ball consistently.
LAKOTA WEST

COACH: Scott Mueller (first season)

LAST SEASON: 12-10 (8-6)

KEY PLAYERS: F Jordan Hicks, F Brandon Candella, G Obi Nwankwo

OUTLOOK: Mueller takes over as interim coach following the retirement of his father, Mike Mueller, and has some decent material to work with. The 6-4 junior Hicks (14.4 ppg, 48.6 percent 3-point shooting) is the son of a former Notre Dame basketball player and is as athletic as any player in the league, while the 6-5 Candella (10.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and junior point guard Nwankwo (9.5 ppg, 2.3 assists per game) join him as returning starters.

"We are still a young team, one that will start three juniors," said Scott Mueller, "but two of those three are returning starters, and two other (juniors) will get significant minutes off the bench."

Two juniors who should help bolster the Firebirds' inside presence are 6-6 Garrett Gordon and 6-5 Alex Smith, both of whom check in at 230 pounds.
MASON

COACH: Greg Richards (181-97)

LAST SEASON: 9-12 (6-Cool

KEY PLAYERS: G Zach Brown, F Luke Sutphin, G Austin Brune, C Rashee Billings, F Derek Cox

OUTLOOK: The Comets look to bounce back from a subpar season last winter behind two of the GMC's most experienced seniors - the 6-3 Brown (15.4 ppg, 40.9 percent 3-point shooting), a Lipscomb University recruit who missed the first half of last season with an injury, and the 6-5 Sutphin (7.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg).

But the injury bug is already taking a toll on this season's team, with returning point guard Brune and probable starting forward Cox shelved for extended periods. Center Billings also is back, after starting about half of Mason's games last season.
OAK HILLS

COACH: Mike Price (240-143)

LAST SEASON: 17-6 (12-2)

KEY PLAYERS: G Alex Rogers, G Jake Proctor

OUTLOOK: Oak Hills will look to extend last season's success with a largely new cast of players. Rogers (6.2 ppg) and Proctor (6.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg) are returning starters who will have to take on larger roles.

"This year's team has little varsity experience but does have some depth and athleticism," Price said.

Guard Erik Stephens averaged 10 minutes per game off the bench last season, while 6-2 junior forward Kurt Kolish and 6-8 junior center Rob Sanfillippo also are being counted on as contributors.
LAKOTA EAST

COACH: Wally Vickers (191-178)

LAST SEASON: 2-19 (1-13)

KEY PLAYERS: F Daniel Lyons, G Logan Hesterberg, G Michael Boyd

OUTLOOK: East hopes to claw its way up the standings with a veteran cast that brings back three starters. Lyons (8.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg) is a third-year starter who was last season's team leader in scoring and rebounding. Boyd (5.8 ppg) returns after starting at point guard as a freshman last season and is joined in the backcourt by Hesterberg.

Juniors Trae Broadnax and Corey Keebler will provide the inside strength for East.

"As a group, we have ability, but we will need to come together quickly," Vickers said. "We must have consistency from our returning players."
SYCAMORE

COACH: Stan Kaniecki (30-34)

LAST SEASON: 8-13 (6-Cool

KEY PLAYERS: G Steve Hull,

F Brett Simek

OUTLOOK: Sycamore has two productive veterans to build around, but the supporting cast "will be inexperienced and small," Kaniecki said. "We will have to utilize our speed and quickness to make up for a lack of height."

Hull (11.7 ppg, 2.8 apg) is an excellent athlete headed to the University of Illinois on a football scholarship. He's joined as a returning starter by Simek (7.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg).
COLERAIN

COACH: Kevin Higgins (50-74)

LAST SEASON: 9-12 (4-10)

KEY PLAYERS: F Ken Kunkel, G Ryan Foster, F Femi Thompson, F Jarrett Grace, G Josh

Quigley

OUTLOOK: Three starters are back in Foster, Thompson and Grace as Colerain looks for improvement based on better interior defense and outside shooting. None of the three was a big scorer, with Thompson (2.5 ppg) leading the way. Kunkel (5.3 ppg), a 6-4 sophomore, is the leading returning scorer.

"This year's team should be very deep, especially at the guard position," Higgins said.
HAMILTON

COACH: Tim Robinson (first season)

LAST SEASON: 4-17 (2-12)

KEY PLAYERS: F Robert Merz, F Sam Jones, G Todd Dockery,

F Drew Townsend

OUTLOOK: Robinson inherits Hamilton's proud tradition, but not much in the way of experience on the roster. Jones (3.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg) is the lone returning starter, while Townsend, the top returning scorer (6.8 ppg), averaged 15 minutes per game.

"Our new guys must step up quickly with a very tough schedule," Robinson said. "Hopefully, later in the year, the players will gain some experience and we will be able to compete with the better teams in the league."
FAIRFIELD

COACH: Kurt Etter (27-37)

LAST SEASON: 14-7 (9-5)

KEY PLAYERS: G Phil Harris,

C Richie Fullam

OUTLOOK: Only two lettermen return from a breakout season for Fairfield's program. Harris (7.2 ppg, 39 percent 3-point shooting) is in his third year as a starter, while the 6-4 Fullam (3.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg) will be relied on to anchor Fairfield's front line.

"Our lack of size, with the two tallest players being 6-4 and 6-3, will require this team to play fundamental basketball," Etter said. "The ability to score from beyond the 3-point line will be important for team success."

GCL South preview

Three of the four GCL South teams received a first-place vote from one of the league's coaches in the preseason poll. However, Elder was the only team in the league not to be picked last by a coach, so the Panthers start the season as the slim favorites to win the ever-competitive division.

Moeller was perfect in GCL play last season, going 14-0, but with most of those Crusaders gone, another team might rise and take the title. Each team finished above .500 overall and in the league last season, and this year promises much of the same.

Teams listed in coaches' predicted order of finish:
ELDER

COACH: Joe Schoenfeld (267-127)

LAST SEASON: 18-5 (10-4)

KEY PLAYERS: F Alex Welch, F Josh Jones, G Alex Eppensteiner, G Selby Chidemo,

G Erich Vogelsang, F Thomas Schneider

OUTLOOK: Schoenfeld had to wait on some of his players who were committed to the football field through the Panthers' run to the Division I state final Nov. 29.

Two of those players, junior Welch and senior Jones, will man the front court for Schoenfeld now that they've finished catching passes from Mark Miller. At 6 feet 5, Welch returns after shooting 61 percent from the field last year to average 8.7 points per game to go along with 4.6 rebounds per game. Jones, a 6-3 forward, scored 7.7 points per game and shot 59 percent from the field.

Junior guard Chidemo, along with Welch and Jones, started the most games last season. Chidemo scored 2.2 points per game and dished out 1.6 assists. Schoenfeld said Chidemo is a "quick guard who is solid at both ends of the floor."

Eppensteiner averaged 2.2 points last season. Vogelsang will see a lot of time at point guard and Schneider, a sophomore, will see time after leading the junior varsity team in scoring as a freshman.

"I think we will have a really good team this year," Schoenfeld said. "It will be a tough, hard-nosed Elder team. We have strength in numbers - a lot of talented players. We should be able to play a lot of guys. We have a pretty fair amount of experience returning, which should help offset a late start due to football."
LA SALLE

COACH: Dan Fleming (257-172)

LAST SEASON: 13-10 (8-6)

KEY PLAYERS: F Danny McElroy, G Jordon Crawford,

F Brandon Neel, G Ryan Fleming, F Austin Kummer

OUTLOOK: McElroy is back for his senior season after leading the Lancers with 14.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last regular season.

Crawford was third on the team with 8.9 points per game, and the guard dished out a team-high 4.3 assists per game.

With the leading scorer and rebounder back along with the assists leader, Fleming's Lancers probably will contend.

"The team is getting better," Fleming said. "We need the seniors to have a good year. Everyone else will follow their lead. The group has worked hard."

Neel and Ryan Fleming are sophomores, but each played in several varsity games last season. Dan Fleming said Neel is a Division I college prospect.

McElroy and Crawford are both seniors, so this will be their team to lead. But they can't be the only players performing.

"Our depth must improve," Fleming said. "Shooting is suspect. If we keep improving, things could get interesting."
MOELLER

COACH: Carl Kremer (318-120)

LAST SEASON: 21-2 (14-0)

KEY PLAYERS: G Tony Harris, F Tim Stamper, F Griffin McKenzie

OUTLOOK: Moeller lost all five starters and several top subs from last season's Associated Press Division I state poll champion. After compiling a 46-4 record over the past two seasons and winning a state

title in 2007, Kremer's Crusaders might be in a rebuilding year - if there is such a thing at Moeller.

Harris, a senior, and McKenzie, a junior, are Division I college prospects, Kremer said. Harris averaged 7.2 points, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game last year.

McKenzie, however, is out indefinitely with a back injury. McKenzie averaged 3.1 points and 3.0 rebounds per game last season as a sophomore.

Stamper, a senior, averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds.

"The challenge for the Crusaders will be how quickly this talented but young, inexperienced team can develop the chemistry to be successful," Kremer said. "Only time will tell about that challenge, but it will be fair to expect another hard-nosed, aggressive and up-tempo Moeller team."
ST. XAVIER

COACH: Scott Martin (155-60)

LAST SEASON: 23-3 (12-2)

KEY PLAYERS: F/C Erik

Stenger, F/G Luke Massa, G Will Carroll

OUTLOOK: Stenger averaged 4.4 points and 3.0 rebounds last regular season for the Bombers, but he is the only truly experienced varsity player Martin has coming back.

"We're just really inexperienced," Martin said. "Erik Stenger is the only guy that played any (significant) varsity minutes for us last year. Right now we're a good team, but I can't predict anything at this time with these guys."

A key for the Bombers will be the health of junior forward/guard Massa. Massa, St. Xavier's starting quarterback on the football field, suffered a broken collarbone in the fall. Martin said Massa just started practicing last week.

La Salle-Moeller basketball showdown
Posted by TomGroeschen at 1/8/2009 2:43 PM EST on Cincinnati.com

La Salle visits Moeller in a GCL South boys' basketball showdown Friday at 7:30 p.m. Both teams are 8-1, with Moeller 3-0 in the GCL and La Salle 2-0. Moeller is No. 3 and La Salle is No. 4 in the Enquirer D-I coaches' poll, and for now they are clearly the two best in the GCL South.

The Crusaders have set the standard in the league recently, with a streak of 20 consecutive GCL wins (including postseason games). Moeller has not lost to a GCL team since falling at La Salle in a regular season game Feb. 9, 2007.

Also, Moeller carries an 18-game home winning streak since losing to La Salle Feb. 10, 2006.

Senior forward Danny McElroy leads La Salle with a 17.1 scoring average, and senior guard Jordon Crawford averages 17.0.

For Moeller, senior guard Tony Harris leads the team with a 13.3 scoring average. Senior guard Brian Vonderhaar and soph guard Charlie Byers are next at 9.3 and 9.1 ppg, respectively.

Moeller is missing its would-be top player, 6-8 junior Griffin McKenzie, out all season with a back ailment. The Crusaders don't have the big offensive guns they typically do, but defense is what truly has made Moeller in coach Carl Kremer's tenure. Moeller pressures the ball as well as any high school program you'll see, and it's shown up again this season as the Crusaders lead the GCL South with a 43.0 defensive scoring average.

It will be serious and macho and crowded and loud. In other words, great stuff.

Mollautt - do you know if we are still recruiting McKenzie hard? I know he would have been considered a big get last summer but with his injury I'm hoping he's fallen off the radar for many of the "big" schools. Looks like he's put up some strong numbers since returning from his injury; numbers that look especially big when you consider how long he's been away and how few minutes he's played.

Go get him, coaches!
