Where the HECK have you been Football_Guru? No pressure; but we've been waiting for you all season to show up and straighten things out. Please; for the love of pete, tell us how to win some games! It's too much to ask that we run the table so how about this Football_Guru? 5 of 6, thus clinching the MAC East, then we win at Ford Field to earn a bowl bid. Without you Football_Guru it was a long shot, but now I'm feeling pretty good about the rest of the season.

No new registrants this time. If traffic was slow on the site recently, though, the gnomes apologize--they just deleted 17 pages of spammers (~520 of them).

So if someone creates a bogus account does that person show up as a member until deleted? I was looking through the list (somewhat, to try to find someone) and noticed usernames with red flag words in them like "buy" and "cheap".
I didn't realize until looking through all the members how many Miami fans were in Russia and previously Russian-owned states. Must be the Frozen Four run.
I never realized how bad the fake user problem was. I don't envy you guys, having to deal with all this B.S.

That would be correct. There are also thousands of "members" that have "sexy" in their username somewhere.
The mods have to actually activate members (rather than automatic posting privileges) to prevent those bots from spamming the boards. We try to delete the fake accounts, but sometimes it's just too much work--we just leave them inactive instead.
This reminds me, I should probably go through things today. Bet we've got a surge of new registrants thanks to the FF.

Okay.
Thanks to handy new code implemented by RedSteve and the gnomes' boredom, we were able to get rid of over 3300 spam registrants last night and today and activate somewhere between 50 and 100 backlogged registrants. In addition, official activation e-mails have gone out to people whose accounts were activated but never used (meaning, most likely, that they were never informed their account had been activated).
I'm not going to bother listing everyone because it would take too much time. But if you're one of the people who got an e-mail this afternoon after signing up for (and forgetting about) MHT back in December, well, we hope you'll log in and join us.

To give you an idea of the scope of spam registrants, yesterday, less than a week after Chuck cleaned out all the previous spam registrants, I cleaned out another 300+ and activated 6.
I need to fire my gatekeeper gnomes. Or buy stock in the Russian mob.

A big part of the spam list that's hitting MHT is due to the old Miami U hockey group that got pirated/hijacked by an ad company and used the group mailing list (of over 200+ members for spam email) to grab other friend association/emails via FB's tools.
I reported this site and the hijacking to FB and that the "new" owner had turned off wall posting and was still using Miami University's name and Hockey Team association as a cover for it's business and no warning had been given to the members of the group when the take over happened. (Basically advertiser agent asked for moderator status, got it, waited and then removed other mods when time was right and replaced links w/those to business/adds/spam etc. )
FB still hasn't done anything about this and Miami University Hockey now takes you to a business link instead of a group under college sports. I sent link and email to Miami, but never heard anything back about it.
How they got a bigger Miami U mailing list was by sending out unprompted group invites via those already members of the group (in violation of FB rules and policies) - those that clicked automatically gave the advertiser access to their friend lists too. Chain pyramid action. Massive spam ensued.
