In golf Kent dreated Florida State in a playoff to reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Win 3 more and they are national champs. _________________ Miami University...17 NCAA tournament appearances...4 Sweet 16's. |

Kent State is currently playing Purdue on the Big Ten Network and is leading 6-2 in the third inning and has a couple of guys on. Valpo has been eliminated. If Kent wins this game, they will be 2-0, Kentucky and Purdue will have to play an elimination game and then the winner would have to beat Kent twice. _________________ Miami University...17 NCAA tournament appearances...4 Sweet 16's. |

Top of the 9th, Purdue needing a rally, as Kent is up 7-3. This is the 4th consecutive year Kent has played in the NCAA tournament, they are very experienced and expect to win. _________________ Miami University...17 NCAA tournament appearances...4 Sweet 16's. |

Ryan Bores throws 111 pitchs, goes the route for his first career complete game, Kent wins 7-3, and as the Big Ten crew says, Kent is in the "drivers seat". After going 21 innings last night and using 5 pitchers, getting a complete game was a real bonus for Kent tonight. _________________ Miami University...17 NCAA tournament appearances...4 Sweet 16's. |

Went up to Centerville today and my Dad was very fired up about the baseball win (he pitched for Kent in the early 60's). Kent has had some outstanding teams over the last half-century.
In other news, had dinner at Las Piramides which was good, and a beer (Pale Ale) at the Dayton Beer Company which was very good. _________________ He's a demon on wheels... |

| When I saw the Gary Regional (Purdue, Kent, Kentucky, and Valpo) I thought Kent had a very good chance to win it and move on. |

It would be cool for Kent State to beat the Phil Knight Machine in the Super Regional! _________________ MIAMI. PRAYER. ANSWERED! -- Steve Baker 12/3/2010

| Well, between Kent State's baseball team, Akron's soccer team, and Miami's hockey team, the MAC really has some great teams in sports that don't move the needle much. |

From the Kent article:
| Quote: | Excellence is the standard when it comes to the Kent State baseball program.
The late New York Yankees captain Thurman Munson was a two-time First Team All-Mid-American Conference standout for the Blue & Gold from 1967-68 before blossoming into a two-time World Series champion, seven-time All-Star and 1976 American League MVP. A Kent State baseball player has been selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft 80 times. Eleven Mid-American Conference regular season championships have been won. Ten more conference tournament crowns have been captured. |
That's pretty impressive. _________________ Love and honor. |

Interesting somewhat irrelevant fact. I played high school baseball and am friends with Thurman Munson's son (Mike) in Canton. Our coach was Thurman's best friend and played ball with him at Kent. He was a strict, fundamentals oriented guy and and paid off, as we were ranked by USA Today my senior year and the team won back to back Div 1 Championships the year after I graduated. I think the Yankees signed Mike for a short period of time. Thurman died in a plane crash at the Akron Canton airport in the prime of his career. Very sad. Mike opened a bar in Canton called Munson's that has a bunch of his dad's memorabilia. Pretty cool place to have a few beers and Mike is a great guy. _________________ Go Redhawks! |

Don't know how long his son played for the Yanks, but I remember him playing against the Chillicothe Paints in the independent Frontier League back in the day. The Paints made it a pretty big deal as to who he was and all that. |

Jess, I am curious on your perspective. I actually think last year's Kent team that lost to Texas in the regional final was actually better than this year's team. Not by a lot, but a little better starting pitching.
The really scary thing is that this Kent team is actually pretty young, so depending on who they lose early, they should continue to be good for a while. _________________ "Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines." - Steven Wright |

Well... I'm not Jess, but I agree with you rolando86. Not to take anything away from Kent, they are a very good team, but the Gary Regional overall was not as strong as last year's Austin Regional.
The amazing thing about Kent's roster is the number of local players. It seems as though half the team comes from either Walsh Jesuit or Canton Glen Oak high schools. |

Being able to draw heavily from good programs is a wonderful thing. It makes me think of the relationship our hockey team has with the Indiana Ice. |

Agreed that the Gary Regional was not the toughest of the 16. But it isn't like they took the easy way through. They went 2-0 vs. the SEC and 1-0 vs. the Big 10...they didn't even have the good fortune of playing Valpo. With that said, I really don't know how strong the Big 10 was this year and a colleague from the MAC office indicated that the SEC wasn't as strong as it has been in the past, but it is still the SEC and SEC baseball is no weak sister.
I think this year's team is probably better simply because of the experience. Skill doesn't always win (see Heat, Miami). Kent State was the only team in that regional with a player that had experience in the NCAA Tournament, and for KSU's seniors, it was their fourth consecutive trip.
Tough to say that this isn't the best team in KSU history because they did something that no other MAC team has ever done (advance to a Super Regional) and sometimes that takes getting a favorable draw. I can easily say that this is the KSU team that has really mobilized alumni and got us talking more than we did in previous seasons.
What makes things intriguing now that they have advanced to a Super Regional is that a case can be made that it is actually easier to win a Super Regional than it is to win a Regional. To win a Regional, you have to play a minimum of 3 games and therefore need quite a bit more pitching. In SR play, you only need two wins and if you have two stud arms, you can roll through anyone if the stars align themselves. |
