Larry Brown? Like the actual Larry Brown, not some guy who just happens to be named Larry Brown? I just don't see that being a good hire at all. How on earth does he recruit, when every kid he's going after will be hearing whispers that he'll leave after 2 years for an NBA job? _________________ "Psycho was low on talent. I doubt the SMU admin will go for that, though. _________________ "Psycho was low on talent. Psycho was low on athleticism. Psycho can play on my team any day. Psycho has the biggest heart of any player I have seen."

I doubt at 71 he is much of a hot commodity anymore for the NBA. _________________ "The Blues had a baby and they named it Rock and Roll!!"

SMU is making a big splash with Larry Brown. It is being reported that Brown will hire CURRENT Illinois State HEAD COACH Tim Jankovich as SMU's "coach in waiting" at a rate of between $800k-$1M per year. Further, that Larry Brown has hired superstar former Illinois assistant coach / and recruiting phenom Jerrance Howard. | Quote: | | A source said Howard would get a significant pay increase from the $180,000 per season he made at Illinois |
Finally, it appears that Brown will bring along current UK assistant coach Rod Strickland.
| Quote: | | Calipari and William “Worldwide Wes” Wesley, the well-known college basketball power broker, were helping Brown assemble his crew, a report said. Brown visited SMU Sunday and Monday. |
It sounds as if SMU is making a huge commitment to having a successful Big East basketball program. _________________ Mollautt to Big A HG: "Dude, you need to bow down and kiss our rings. You are talking to giants."

I'm sure Cal coached on not spending all his budget on coaches. Gotta leave some on the table for the players, parents and proxy test takers. _________________ I don't read literature. I read literary criticism. |

I'm trying to decide if Larry Brown is too principled and old school to be a shadeball like Cal or if he is old enough to not give a damn if he is caught. _________________ http://velvetblazer.blogspot.com |

Seriously, Larry Brown was Calapari before being Calapari was cool. He left both UCLA and Kansas under a cloud of NCAA violations and sanctions. |

Oh man, and I'm pretty sure Kansas was banned from the NCAAs back in 89 after they won if I recall. I don't know what the hell I was thinking. Whoops. I was probably thinking of that other morally-rigid Larry that coached in the Big 12, Larry Eustachy. _________________ http://velvetblazer.blogspot.com |

How can you hire a CURRENT head coach? Seriously, how is that possible? Further, how does said CURRENT head coach remain a CURRENT head coach at his CURRENT position after this?
And that's the least shady part of all this. _________________ Most Livable City... |

Really? Everyone in the media always ranted and raved about him. I guess this could explain the high assistant turnover. _________________ MIAMI. PRAYER. ANSWERED! -- Steve Baker 12/3/2010

Beat Duke or UNC once in awhile, be the last team out for the tourney a couple of years in a row, and the media seems to remember you. |

I liked how he was outspoken against some of the more seedy recruiting practices in college basketball. But that may have all been a facade. _________________ Most Livable City... |
