Anybody that says that Josh Harris was one of the best players he's ever coached (which the walking penis did last night) clearly knows nothing about football.

Let's start the Urban Era off with a bang, shall we?

Power spread can work, Michigan this year is an example of that. But, the reason why Michigan was better this year and why Florida won 2 national championships was their defense. Yeah, your spread offense will score tons of points against teams with inferior athletes, even RichRod's offense at UM did that. But against the big boys who can also run, the spread becomes ineffective. RichRod against OSU: 7, 10, and 7 points respectively. Nomad, you say Chris Leak. Well I counter with John Brantley. That '06 Florida team won in spite of their offense, that defense was outstanding. You also need a QB who can throw and run a lot. Tebow was ideal because he could just throw well enough while not getting hurt. Braxton Miller has gotten hurt every year he's played football since he started high school at Wayne. He won't be able to handle the pounding. The defense will determine how good OSU is, not their offense necessarily.

That being said, I don't think it's a given OSU will win all the recruiting battles with UM. It's highly unlikely Brady Hoke will coach anywhere else, he hasn't waffled about any decision making regarding his future, and he has a good track record on and off the field. Urban Meyer had the most guys arrested in a 5 year period, his commitment is in question, more NCAA sanctions are coming. It'll be interesting to watch.

let's test that theory against houston....Wink

6 weeks with Mattison to prepare and learn more of that defense, I'll take Michigan. After the first couple of defensive stops and subsequent long Michigan drives where that offensive line beats up Houston, it'll be over.

Today (3 pm) is judgement day...who wants to bet that it isn't a harsh penalty???

It'll be the harshest slap on the wrist possible. Acceptance of the trivial penalties OSU has already put in place.

One 'sanction' is public... no bowl after the 2012 season. In what will be a rebuilding year anyway, the Bucks don' tget to go to Lame.com Bowl and lose to an SEC team.

So.

9 schollies, no bowl after 2012, no B10 champ. game after 2012, show cause for tressel.

My sister is furious at the 'unprecedented, over-the-top punishment' for Ohio State considering it was just Pryor cheating. She also hates that I 'hate' on OSU just because I went to a 'small' school that no one in Ohio cheers for.

It saddens me that basic intelligent deductive reasoning is missing from her lobes.

The NCAA hit Ohio State with a one-year bowl ban and other penalties on Tuesday for a scandal that involved eight players taking a total of $14,000 in cash and tattoos in exchange for jerseys, rings and other Buckeyes memorabilia.

The university had previously offered to vacate the 2010 season, return bowl money, go on two years of NCAA probation and use five fewer football scholarships over the next three years.

But the NCAA countered with a bowl ban in Urban Meyer’s first year as head coach in 2012, further reduced the number of scholarships and tacked on a year of probation.

The NCAA imposed a one-year postseason ban on Ohio State University's football program, citing the school for "failure to monitor, preferential treatment and extra benefit violations."

Former head coach Jim Tressel also was found to have engaged in unethical conduct. Tressel resigned in May after admitting he played ineligible players and lied to the NCAA about it.

The penalties in this case, some of which were self-imposed and adopted by an NCAA committee, include a bowl ban for the 2012 season, additional scholarship reductions and forfeiture of almost $340,000.

=>In all fairness, I think Ohio State did more than anyone ever expected them to do. Tressel had just won 6 straight Big Ten titles, a national title, 2 runnerup finishes, participated in 8 BCS Bowl games, and dominated Michigan.

I would have never thought Tressel would be fired over the whole thing.

Tressel was on the way to getting into the discussion with Woody Hayes as the most successful coach ever at the school:

1) Big Ten Titles

* Hayes won or shared 13 Big Ten titles in 28 years (46%).

* Tressel won or shared 7 Big Ten titles in 10 years (70%) in an era with Penn State.

2) National Titles

* Hayes shared 5 national titles. But in only one of those "national titles" was OSU ranked #1 in both AP and coaches polls (1968), but Georgia and Texas also were crowned champions by other methods that year. On 2 of those titles, OSU wasn't even ranked #1 in either of the major polls. Hayes never earned an undisputed national championship.

* Tressel won 1 undisputed national title (plus 4 DI-AA titles at Youngstown State = 5 national titles total). Tressel was twice runner-up for national title at OSU (also DI-AA runner-up twice at YSU).

3) Top 10/Top20 Finishes

* Hayes had 15 top 10 finishes in at least 1 major poll (53%) and 21 top 20 finishes (75%) in 28 years.

* Tressel had 8 top 10 finishes in at least 1 major poll (80%) and 9 top 20 finishes (90%) in 10 years.

4) Winning %

* Hayes record at OSU was 205-61-10 (76%) and in the Big Ten was 152-37-7 (79%).

* Tressell's record (before forfeits) at OSU was 106-22 (83%) and in the Big Ten was 66-14 (83%).

The University of Spoiled Children are going to be even more mad. At least Pete Carroll didn't know Bush was ineligible. Tressel knew the entire time the team was using ineligible players yet did nothing but promote his book on integrity.

One of my friends who has little to no interest at all in sports said this to me the other day... "Big time college football fans are just the worst!"

For the most part, I couldn't agree more. The hypocritical apologist OSU fans have me in stitches. Just too funny.

Never thought I'd be defending OSU...but the NCAA add-ons seem harsh. I thought the self-imposed punishment was in keeping with the scale of the "crimes."

UB has been making great strides in recruiting over the past couple weeks (if you count poaching other school's recruits as "strides"). I wonder if this will cause some reconsiderations.

I have no problem with the penalty, I just think the timing of it all is dumb. First you had the guilty players playing in the bowl last year. Now tOSU is still bowling this year, and then next year they are ineligible? Its just all screwy. But then, what else do you expect from the NCAA.

15,000+ is small? Ok, good to know. That said, I do somewhat agree that a 1-year bowl ban seems a bit unnecessary.

Let's be honest with ourselves: barring a death penalty that was never ever being considered, nothing was coming that could slow Ohio down.

And I treat Urban like I treat LeBron...any year without a title is a good year so 2012 is already a win for me and a failure for Ohio.

With Smith and Gee going unpunished, these penalties today are not near enough.

14k compared to the hundreds of thousands OSU will likely lose without a bowl or B10 title game possibility (their offense is helmed by Pryor II, but that defense will keep them in title contention).
It wasn't a for or against comment, just saying... that's a heck of a trade off. lol
