Kent State lands Brooklyn forward

Brooklyn, N.Y. forward Chris Ortiz has verbally committed to Kent State, ESPN.com confirmed on Monday.

The 6-foot-7 Ortiz from Christ the King High School will spend a post-grad year at South Kent School next year before enrolling at Kent St. in 2012.

Ortiz averaged 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks as CTK captured the City Title in 2011 before falling in the State Federation finals. He joins Virginia power forward Richard Smith in the Golden Flashes 2012 recruiting class.

Supposedly (according to a guy I work with), Akbar is "maybe 6-4."

This guy accurately predicted the transfer of Juwan Saten early in the season.

...but gets a commit from 6'5" 2G Reggie McAdams, Elida HS (Elida) and 6'6" SF Jake Kretzer, Waverly HS

Rivals *** PF Will Regan will transfer from Virginia to Buffalo and have 3 years of eligibility after sitting out the 2011-12 season. Regan was ranked as the #29 PF in the nation and a top-150 player in the 2010 class.

He originally had offers from Arizona State, Auburn, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon State, St. Johns, Stanford and many others.

Ha!

The kids are trying to get to the front of the line as signing with a team with a lame duck coach is in vogue these days!

I know two prospects we had a very good chance at getting if we didn't still have this situation perpetuated by our AD. Those two are now going to play for others.

I don't get what you guys are hoping for...that Coles is fired now or that he's extended? Because saying 'Jermaine will be HC' still leaves a lame duck in charge.

What we are hoping for is the AD to take some action and not leave a situation hanging where potential recruits do not know who their next coach will be. And because I may become even more irrational I will let Nickskin explain.

The problem here isn't just that there's a lame duck in charge, it's that there's a lame duck in charge with absolutely no provision for succession. CC's contract is up at the end of the year -- a fact well-known to anyone who'd be recruiting against us -- and there has been literally no public confirmation of what happens next spring. That leaves our recruiting stuck in a very bad place, because other programs can quite correctly tell potential Miami recruits that no one has any idea who will be coaching the RedHawks next year, whether it will be CC renewed for another year, someone else on the staff, or a completely new staff brought in from outside. "Sure, you might like Miami, but we can provide stability on the bench that they can't; we can give you similar competition; and we can make sure you get a quality education too."

Recruits like stability. Sure, they may transfer, or they may quit playing the sport entirely. But a recruit's regular goal at a MAC school is to stay for four or five years, excel with his teammates on the court, and get a degree. People we're recruiting right now, who will enter college in the fall of 2012, have no clue who will be coaching when they enter school. (I suppose it's possible that there's a private succession plan we're communicating exclusively to recruits, but (1) that's stupid, because what about recruits who we might become interested in later who have already heard from other MAC coaches about succession problems, and (2) given the way recruiting information spreads like wildfire on the internet, you'd expect we'd have heard about it by now.)

It's different if there's an established succession plan. Say, for example, that it's announced CC will retire at the end of this season, and Henderson or Lickliter will take over. All of a sudden, the "instability" argument carries much less weight. Is it true that there will be staff turnover in the offseason as CC retires and his appointed successor takes over? Sure, because there's at least one assistant spot to fill. But there's stability overall: if you like the way Henderson coaches, you know he'll be in charge when you come to Miami. (Of course, opposing coaches can still claim the appointed successor will suck, but that's not really any different from claiming the current head coach sucks.)

It's true, in the trivial sense, that there's no way anyone can really know who will be the coach of any program next season. A coach might resign for any number of reasons, or a coach on the proverbial hot seat might be fired. But any coach could resign at any time, while what we have here is a coach who, as it currently stands, 100% will not have a job at the end of the season. Even the coach who's on the hot seat has a better pitch than the program everyone knows doesn't have a coach -- at least he can say, "You're the missing piece of the puzzle. With you, we can right the ship."

In July the Akron Coaching Staff claimed to have only one scholarship available; Kretzer accepted on terms that he would have the bid secured. Recently, SF Reggie McAdams comitted to Akron as well; thus, Kretzer & McAdams will be vying for the same scholarship.

With playing time in question for both SF's it's likely one or the other may end up somewhere else.

boy that is confusing. So Akron offered two guys the same scholarship?

I would think that the longer Jake is committed to Akron, the fewer options he would have as those other potential suitors would be filling up.

Best of luck to Jake...hopefully the Miami staff hasn't moved on....but if it has, it is certainly understandable.
