|
|
Add Bates to list of potential Illinois ADs "Source says Illini have serious interest in man who helped rebuild football program at Miami (Ohio)"
| Quote: | Illinois is making progress in its search for an athletic director, and a new name has emerged as a strong candidate.
An industry source told the Tribune that the school has serious interest in Brad Bates, the athletic director from Miami (Ohio). Bates was a walk-on defensive back at Michigan under Bo Schembechler, has a doctorate in education from Vanderbilt and has helped rebuild a football program that last year won the Mid-American Conference.
A source with ties to the school said viable candidates include Rick George, an Illinois alum who's chief operating officer of the Rangers; Illinois associate AD Tom Michael; South Florida AD Doug Woolard; Xavier AD Mike Bobinski, a Notre Dame alum who will serve as chair of the 2012-13 Division I Men's Basketball Committee; Craig Tiley, who led the Illini to an NCAA title in tennis and now serves as director of Tennis Australia; and Buffalo AD Warde Manuel.
Illinois also pursued alum Jim Phillips, but the Northwestern AD will sign an extension to stay in Evanston through 2020, according to sources. |

Bates has been tied to just about every major opening for a AD the last 5 years so this should be no surprise. I am sure he has interviewed for more than one other position. As so many like to point out, in sports, Miami is rarely a destination. Unfortunately. _________________ "The Blues had a baby and they named it Rock and Roll!!"

i'm not surprised in the least. just noting it. this first report doesn't say yet that he has agreed to speak - just that he has been identified by the search committee.
Bates has been on the long and short list of a number of searches, declined interviews for some, actively interviewed for others and received at least 1 or 2 BCS opportunities to move one, which he has declined. from the recent football turnaround and hockey success (even to a non-hockey school), he will get some attention. the question really is what type of job is he holding out for, other than a Michigan (probably not going to happen for a long time with Brandon there). would it be an Illinois? |

Athletic department is trying to transform the campus into a ‘destination institution.’

Nah, the quarterly coach/AD is a candidate for X job discussion. Stoning blasphemers is always in season. *S* _________________ Season ticket holder football and hockey since 1995

Thought that guy from the Rangers, Rick George? was top of the list for Illinois job. _________________ ESPN is to the BCS what FOX News is to the Republican party. The irony now is: if B2 wants Miami to be a "destination institution" as the HJC article mentioned last week, then he cant go anywhere if that plan is to have any traction. Cant expect the coaches to have retention for the long haul if the captain of the ship bolts. He's been in Oxford for a while, obviously, but now that this plan is being put in motion the past tenure doesn't quite count anymore. _________________ "I believe in the love that you gave me

maybe the "big announcement concerning the future of the Men's Basketball Program..." is that Brad Bates is taking the Illinois AD job.

Well, at least he'll get a renovated basketball facility that way.... _________________ "I believe in the love that you gave me

IMO he's already turned down better jobs than Illinois in the past, so why jump at that now. Still, one never knows. _________________ Season ticket holder football and hockey since 1995

I am impressed if he turned down better jobs than Illinois. I would think that's a top 25 job for an athletic director. |

It wasn't Bates that was chosen to lead Illinois athletics - but it was another SW Ohio Athletic Director that was...

You know, if BB had gone to Illinois (or any B10 team other than OSU), I'd sincerely wish him well and thank him for his years at Miami.
That would not be the case if he went to UC. _________________ Love and honor. |

He goes where he goes. His career. Obviously he has been looking as his name has been associated with several openings. _________________ "The Blues had a baby and they named it Rock and Roll!!"

For the difference in what BB would make at UC compared to Miami, not worth it for him.
Besides, Brad has too much class to work at a dump like UC.
