|
|
I was reading in another thread where 2 guys were discussing / arguing which 4 year period was the Dark Years in Miami Football.
Well, its been a slow July & I have way too much time on my hands, so I decided to build an excel spreadsheet and find out which 4 year periods were the worst and the best for Miami football. For years when ties were still possible, I gave half a win and half a loss for each tie to calculate winning percentages.
The Worst
1898 thru 1901 16.7 % - 2 wins, 12 losses, 1 tie
1939 thru 1942 20.0 % - 6 wins, 27 losses, 2 ties
1897 thru 1900 20.6 % - 3 wins, 13 losses, 1 tie
2006 thru 2009 22.4 % - 11 wins, 38 losses
1987 thru 1990 30.7 % - 12 wins 29 losses, 3 ties
The Best
1952 thru 1955 90.3 % - 32 wins, 3 losses, 1 tie
1916 thru 1919 90.0 % - 25 wins, 1 loss, 4 ties
1972 thru 1975 89.8 % - 39 wins, 4 losses, 1 tie
1953 thru 1956 88.9 % - 31 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties
1915 thru 1918 86.7 % - 24 wins, 2 losses, 4 ties
1918 thru 1921 86.7 % - 25 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties
Incidently, with last year's 10 - 4 season, Miami (#19) has climbed back into the top 20 all time winning percentage for division 1A _________________ "Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end." |

I was the one claiming that 2006-2009 were the dark years before, but I wish I hadn't brought it up because that's a lot more recent than the "Best Years" examples.
I'm going to try and spin this into a positive:
If I were going into my sophomore year RIGHT NOW, I would be telling all of my friends that we would be witnessing history for the next three seasons and would definitely be graduating in the tops list. _________________ RedHawkInsider on Twitter |

So basically for those of us here on Hawktalk, 2006-2009 was the worst period and 1972-1975 was the best. That was also a time period when we were beating quite a few BCS teams and played a more difficult schedule than we did in the 50's. _________________ Miami University...17 NCAA tournament appearances...4 Sweet 16's. |

My four years were 2005-2008 (the entire Montgomery Era)... yet somehow I still graduated as a fan of Miami Football. Miracles do happen |

I would have to add that 1987-1990 were also the four years between Ron Harper and Joby Wright, and were also the years of finishing 8th or 9th every year in the CCHA (out of 9 teams). _________________ And the days that I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations

2006 thru 2009 22.4 % - 11 wins, 38 losses

So who among us has the worst and best four-year record?
Mine is 1983 thru 1986 - 54.4% - 24 wins, 20 losses, 1 tie.

My 4 years were pretty darn good. 2001-2005. I came just in time for the Ben years. Although, I would have liked to have seen the hockey NCAA tournament years. Or at least some games at the new Goggin. _________________ http://saveuahhockey.com/ |

2003-2007 : 36-27
However, I was there as both quality and fan interest fell off a cliff. My freshman year was the epic BR lead 13-1 campaign where kids were failing exams the next day cause they skipped studying to go to the BG and Marshall games (me included). And you fast forward to my last year, where even though we were 6-7, the 2-10 campaign the year before sucked alot of life out and people were choosing to sleep in or eat a late brunch as opposed to going to a game.
I was there for the Penno shot and our first #1 ranking in hockey, so I view my Miami sports timeline as fairly successful. _________________ http://velvetblazer.blogspot.com |

1989 - 1992
19-21-4 .477
End of the Rose era and beginning of the Walker era.
Basketball 75-44 .630 - MAC Champs in 1992 with exciting NCAA game vs. UNC in Cincinnati. MAC Regular Season Champs in 1993 with nice run in NIT, including win over OSU.
Hockey 62-78-18 .449 - CCHA Regular Season Champs in 1993 with first trip to NCAA tournament.
Hockey had the least success when I was there, but always seemed to be the most popular with students, even with a horrible year in 1990-91.

Yep!
Sadly though, it has to be one of the winningest periods in CFB history (D1-A) to not have a conference title or bowl game over a 4 year period.
Winning % was .705 with non-conf wins over VaTech, UNC, Northwestern, Vandy, Army x2, Cincy...
Got hosed against Ohio A&M my senior year. |

1986-1989/1990
Football: 15-28-1 (34.88%)
(Basketball and hockey were equally pathetic during this stretch, but I don't have time to research the records over that span.) _________________ "You come into Oxford and you come up a hill.... Having been a student and area alum in those years, I can tell you Miami hockey wasn't winning anything from 1985-1990

I will accept that challenge! I will also do a combined percentage for all 3 sports to determine the best & worst 4 year period since hockey finished its first 4 varsity years.
However, I would like some feedback; football, basketball & hockey play different numbers of games per season - i.e. football only plays 12 to 14 games in the modern era, basketball plays 30 to 36, and hockey plays 36 to 44 counting playoffs.
So, I could combine all the wins, losses, & ties for all 3 sports for each 4 year period and calculate a percentage,
or
I could average the percentages for all 3 sports, which I think is the fair way to do it since football plays a far lower number of games - otherwise it would give less weight to football and more to basketball & hockey.

I think average the win percentages for all three sports, rather than total number of games. You're right that total number of games weights hockey and bball a lot more. _________________ "Psycho was low on talent. Psycho was low on athleticism. Psycho can play on my team any day. I'm going to predict that the 1990 graduates (me, Steverem, IndySkin) will prove to have partied through the worst combined four years, although 1991 may be worse. _________________ And the days that I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations
