I agree completely that a true PG is priority No. 1. Not sure I understand the rest of your statement... do you think we need to be looking for guards with the other scholly or that McKenzie isn't a stud?

im not sold on mckenzie...with only two scholarships, i think we can be VERY selective, and use next years incoming class as a huge draw for top players

Got it! I hope we can be selective and get an absolute stud, but a part of me wonders if McKenzie isn't that guy. He somewhat exploded this past summer but lost all that momentum with his injury. I wonder if he'd be considered "out of our league" by many recruiting sights if he had played his full junior year.

I know Monty turned off a lot of people to the idea of an outside-shooting big man, and McKenzie is likely a 4, but a 6'8" who in 8 games is 8 of 10 from deep (4 for 4 in his last game) has me very interested.

If he's right for us I hope we get him. Most important is getting that PG that can be a game changer.

with the history of injuries to Miami's big men I'd be a bit concerned about McKenzie

=>Coach Grunk was in attendance Saturday watching McKenzie play in the tourney loss to Aiken. McKenzie had 11 points I believe.

In the short time he played, he shot 47.5% from the field and 81.3% from the line. Excellent numbers.

=>What happened to the UC offer?

Quote:
Griffin McKenzie claimed scholarship offers from Miami (OH), Ohio and Harvard. He also has Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Providence, Butler, Xavier and Minnesota trailing him.

=>GG and GM discussed after Scout.com Evan Daniels checks them out at the AMC tourney in Bloomington, Indiana:

Quote:
Ge-Lawn Guyn played well for Indiana Elite (Fox) against the Michigan Mustangs. The 6-foot-2 guard, who is a terrific on the ball defender, came out firing and buried a handful of three-pointers.

***

Griffin McKenzie is finally getting healthy. The 6-foot-9 post player can really shoot it from long range.

=>ESPN Evaluation:

Quote:
Evaluation

April, 2009:
Griffin is a very effective high post player that can play both center or power forward at the next level. He is a very good face up shooter all the way to 20 feet. He is an effective passer from the high post and would be very good in a motion offense. Griffin is a decent rebounder but needs to increase his strength and assertiveness to be more effective. He can get pushed out of position or he will simply stand and watch and not fight for rebounding position. Defensively he has a good grasp of defensive principles he, again, needs to get stronger and be more assertive. Offense is definitely a great catch and shoot scorer. That is his strong suit but he needs to stay in attack mode in order to reach his potential.

=>McKenzie from Xavier recruiting perspective:

"Coaches will be on the road"

Quote:
Other 17 and under players to keep a close eye on are Victor Oladipo, Griffin McKenzie, Jordan Manuel, and Brandon Spearman. Oladipo has an offer from the Musketeers, and could fill the role of small forward. Spearman, Manuel, and McKenzie are high on the target list, but at this point they do not have offers. Manuel especially is someone who will be under the microscope from the staff as they try and determine what his status will be on their recruiting board.

=>Griffin was balling this afternoon. In front of the Miami staff and head coaches of X and UC, he had 12 points in the 1st half vs. Pump-N-Run. 2 free throws, a 2 handed slam, a back to the basketball short hook, and 2 treys. Crying or Very sad

=>Update:

Quote:
Griffin McKenzie: No one did a better job of raising his stock than McKenzie. Now that McKenzie is healthy he is playing better and becoming a matchup problem because of his ability to shoot the ball. Most impressive with McKenzie was that he rebounded and played down low with some toughness. Because of his strong play high-major schools from all over began calling, and as soon as his team got bounced from the tournament the offers began pouring in, and Xavier was one of the schools that came forward with one.

We can only hope he's one of those guys who is big on feeling wanted and thinks, "these guys wanted me when I was injured and before all the big schools came calling".

I wouldn't give up hope for him entirely but I think we definitely need to concentrate our energies elsewhere.
