Some people questioned how I can rank the young classes. Well Im the individual who invited all the Kentucky kids to the JR All Americans Camps the last two years. I also attend all the state AAU tournaments, young and old. I try my hardest to see all the kids play that I can. I also have help from some real respected basketball people around the state that help me.
After evaluating Kentucky kids on the summer AAU circuit and elite camps I felt it was time to adjust my rankings for the upcoming 2008/2009 Kentucky preps season. I m very excited about the young talent in Kentucky. With the one exception of the 2009 class, all the other classes or loaded with potential division 1 talent. It will be hard for anyone to overtake Jon Hood for the Mr. Basketball honors. Hes the best player and hes going to Kentucky, enough said. The 2009 class maybe locked, but the 2010 class will be a beauty to watch. There are legitimately 6 guys that can take home the honor and it doesnt get any easier in 2011 or 2012.
2009 Class
As most people realize the 2009 class is not as near talented as the 2008, but it still has its share of talent starting with future UK Wildcat Jon Hood.

Vee Sanford (Lexington Catholic High, Lexington): Out of everybody in this class Vee might have the highest upside. He is a 63 point guard with a high motor, great athletic ability and a clutch jump shooter. With all the stars on Lexington Catholic last year in many games he was their best player on the floor. Vee has great genes with his dad being a high school All-American with offers from UK and Georgia Tech back in the day. With all his talent when Vee really learns the game the skys the limit. Update: This kid made the biggest leap for me this summer. Even though he didnt play a lot of AAU, when he did his impact was felt. Watching his work ethic Vee can make a lot of noise this season at Catholic. There is no reason he cant be this years Shelvin Mack.
Jacob Jenkins (DuPont Manuel High, Louisville): Jacob has impressed me this spring with his ability score in volumes. Jacob has some great offers out there and for whatever school he signs with he will help their offense immensely. If Jacob works on his defense and playmaking more his stock definitely has a chance to rise. With so much pressure to be the man at Manuel High School this year I hope he gets the chance to round out his game. If that happens Jacob may have a shot to make a hard run for Mr. Basketball. Update: Jacob impressed me over the summer with his scoring. He still has some work to do on the complete game. With him being the competitor he is, by the end of his senior year Jacob will have made some real noise.
CJ Penny (Anderson County High, Lawrenceville): CJ is a very good wing forward. He doesnt have many weaknesses in his game. After watching him play numerous times this spring CJ is player that will never hurt is team. He has a great feel and knowledge for the game. He has the ability to be an immediate impact on any mid major he signs with. Update: CJ is going to be CJ. His game is going to stay steady and you can see he works on it every day. You watch him play he doesnt jump out at you but at the end of the game hes giving you 16pts, 6rbs, 3ass and 3stls
Richie Phares (Scott County High, Georgetown): Richie is hands down the most polished postman in the state this year. Around the basket he scores with both hands and is unstoppable. This past year he has added good range to his game and his passing ability has picked up. Richie probably will wind up at a high mid major, but if a big conference second tier team took a chance on this 67 power forward I feel before its all said and done he would be a great asset to the team. Update: I wish I could say the same thing about Richie that I said about Jon. I hate to say it but it look like Richie has gotten content with his game. I know he had some major distractions this summer, but the kid has way too much talent to play the way he played. I tell people its real important when you choose an AAU team. Richie should have never played for the Derek Smith All Stars. They never showcased his talents. All in all as skilled as Richie is, he should have had way more looks throughout the summer. With all this being said he is still one of the top five seniors in the state and has a chance to redeem himself this season.

2010 Class
The 2010 class maybe the deepest class in Kentucky history. There are over 20 kids in this class that should play high major to mid major basketball in the future. We start at the top with a very talented guard from Covington Holmes, Ricardo Johnson. All in all, Im catching the most heat for this pick at number one. After the summer my choice hasnt changed. Although GeLawn and Aaron have closed that gap some.
Ricardo Johnson (Covington Holmes High, Covington): We have watched Ricardo play for the last two years but the rest of the state wasnt welcomed to Ricardo talents till his talent was put on the largest stage at the state championship in Rupp Arena. Ricardo was the catalyst for leading his team to the finals against Mason County. Even though Covington Holmes came up short it wasnt from lack of effort from Ricardo, who was a star in the game and made the all tournament team. Ricardo can do it all from the point guard, shooting guard or the wing position. This kid is definitely a high major talent. Update: Ricardo showed me his complete game this summer. He is the total package. At nationals I sat with two coaches from SEC powerhouses and they were both impressed by his play. The reality its up to Ricardo on what he wants to be. The main knock I do have on Ricardo is sometimes I think he doesnt realize that he is the best player on the floor and he lays back. With his body and skill this kid has if he goes on attack mode this year, dont be surprised to see Covington Holmes back where they were last year this time cutting down the net.
GeLawn Guyn (Scott County High, Georgetown): GeLawn is a 62 combo guard who does it all and leaves it all on the floor. On a team with 7 potential high and mid range D-1 prospects GeLawn maybe the best. This is a kid whose work ethic is beyond approach. The knock on him is that he doesnt have a true position, when you play as good and as hard as he does it doesnt matter. Gelawn is getting serious looks from Xavier, Wake Forest and Louisville. Update: Out of everybody in the 2010 class this summer GeLawn stood out the best to me. This kids intensity is unreal. He may be the beat perimeter defender Ive seen in KY in over ten years. The range on his jumper has gotten better and he steadily working on his ball handling and playmaking skills. Some high major schools or sleeping on him. Whoever takes this kid is getting a special player.
Aaron Cosby (Jeffersontown High, Jeffersontown): Aaron is your prototypal combo guard. He is 63 strong, quick and athletic. Aaron is a very consistent outside shooter, finishes hard around the basket while taking hard hits. What we really love about Aaron is he thinks the game, Aaron could lead the state in scoring but he wont because he lets the game come to him without forcing anything. With J-Town returning most the major players to their team adding Aaron really give them a chance to cut down the nets in Rupp this year. Aaron had verbally committed to University of Massachusetts, but when Travis Ford took the Oklahoma State job he opened up his recruitment. Now he has Minnesota, Louisville, Virginia, Tennessee and Oklahoma State courting his services. Update: Aaron by far is the most consistent player in this class. This kid is a stat stuffer. This summer he showed he can score on anybody in the country. His I.Q. is outstanding, when he jumpers not falling he attack the basket with force. He fell into the AAU trap also. An AAU team decision is very important when youre going to be showcasing your talent in front of many college coaches. If it wasnt for personal workouts Aaron stock could have definitely dropped.

Josh Sewell (Trinity, Louisville): I really like this kid. People knock him and say hes not a great ball handler or a great shooter. I saw this kid play many times. He a decent shooter, but he attacks the basket with his great body takes contact well. Plays with a great I.Q. and within himself. With tools he has and the way he works on his game this kid is a high mid major with a chance to move up.

Elijah Pittman (Covington Holmes, Covington): After watching this kid play over 20 times this summer. Im convinced he is the most talented player in the state. As we know talent doesnt make you the best. Theres times Elijah looks like a potential McDonalds All American, than theres times he looks like a JV player. Ive seen him take the ball off the rim, go coast to coast and dunk over a 69 player. I also saw him fade away on a player 6 inches shorter than him. If he decides to put it altogether, I would pick Covington Holmes to cut down the net. Thats a big if.

2011
The 2011 class took a hit with the departure of Tony Kimbro Jr but added a couple studs with the edition of UK recruit Vinny Zollo to Clark County High and sharpshooter Kevin Shaw to Seneca High. So look for the 2011 class to make a lot of noise in the state of Kentucky this year. What makes the 2011 class so unique is the dynamic duos on so many team. Just look at Clark County (Zollo, Stenzil), Warren Central (Fant, Shanklin), Seneca (Shaw, Shaw), Mason County (Gilbert, Setty), Tates Creek (Fucci, Barksdale) and Lexington Catholic (Beckham, Schuette) just to name a few. This lets me know the run for the state championship they next few years will definitely be interesting.

The 2012 class is in the process of making a statement on the national scene. This class should continue the success of the last two classes and keep building the state pride on high school basketball talent. The top three in the class could easily been ranked in any order. All three individuals have the potential to be a future McDonalds All-American.
Jaylen Beckham (Lexington Catholic High, Lexington): Jaylen maybe one of the best defensive players in his class nationally. After his showing at the Fab Freshman All-American Camp, he made a statement on the court that he definitely is one of the elite kids in the 2012 class. He has no problem getting to the rack on anybody. He finishes great with contact; his only knock is a consistent jump shot, which he works on daily. If I was to compare him to anybody at this stage, it would be Kentucky great Rajon Rondo.
Tamron Manning (Scott County High, Georgetown): Out of all the kids to come through Kentucky high school basketball powerhouse Scott County, Tamron has the potential to wind up the best. He has the tools to dominate his age group whenever he wants. He also has the privilege of guarding two high D-1 prospects in practice every day (GeLawn Guyn and Chad Jackson). Being one of the few 8th graders invited to the Tennessee Elite Camp, Tamron stood out with some kids much older than him. He prides himself on the defensive end. He works extremely hard, which is a tribute to the program Coach Hicks in building down Scott County.
Desmond Dorsey (J-Town High, Jeffersontown): Desmond is probably the smoothest player in this class. He can play the one, two or the three. His game is so cool; he is never in a rush and has great composure. He has been making noise in Louisville since his elementary days. If you put Desmond on the court with grown men you wouldnt know he was an 8th grader on the floor. If he continues to work as hard as hes been working, when its all said and done we should be mentioning his name with some of the Louisville greats.
Isaiah Ivey (Scott County High, Georgetown): Isaiah transferred to Scott County, which in the long run will be an asset to his game. At 80% of the schools in the state Isaiah would be a varsity starter at Scott County hell play some JV. Around the state a lot of people wont get a chance to see how good he is. Believe me this smooth left hander has game. He has the all-around game and can play the one or the two. He plays very good defense and has a very smooth jumper.
Chris Harrison (Trinity High, Louisville): Chris comes from good jeans, his father was a high school legend and is a former UK basketball player. He is a little undersized but has good bounce in his game. He has good quickness and a nice jump shot with his game. Once he gets a lot of the flash out of his game and more substance he will be a force to reckon with in KY the next 4 years.

Ive been scouting for over 10 years, so I dont want to over evaluate these younger kids or add extra pressure to them. So while ranking the 2013 and 2014 class, I just went by the kids I have seen play and the potential I see in them at this age. By no means should any kid be discouraged by their ranking or by not being rank at all. I want you to realize in 7th and 8th grade Michael Jordan and Derrick Rose weren't ranked. Derrick said he made it a point that when he went up against a kid he saw ranked that he made sure he put his best effort forward and then some. So note, for you kids ranked watch your back, every time you step on the court somebody will be coming after your spot. So, congratulations to the kids that made the rankings; and to the kids that didn't: keep working hard and you'll have a chance to earn a spot when we see you play next. Update: As I stated earlier this summer you can see my rankings for the 2013 and 2014 classes have definitely changed. We are not done, we know their or more young kids in the state we need to see and believe me sooner or later we will see them.

Hood and Pittman tabbed No. 1
Madisonville guard Jon Hood, the favorite for Kentucky's Mr. Basketball award this season, was tabbed as the No. 1 senior in the state by Rick Bolus' High Potential Recruiting Service new rankings of the top 100 seniors in the state.
Bolus also listed the top 26 underclassmen in the state and Covington Holmes junior Elijah Pittman was ranked No. 1 in that listing.
Hood (photo) leads the seniors and is followed by Manual's Jacob Jenkins, Lexington Catholic's Vee Sanford, Moore's Eric Mosley, Anderson County's C.J. Penny, Ballard's Wesley Cox, North Hardin's Greg Johnson, Scott County's Richie Phares, Adair County's Darren Ballou, Jeffersontown's Jordan Reves, June Buchanan's Garrison Collins and Franklin County's Andy Donovan.
The top sleeper in the state in Bolus' senior rankings is Shawnee's Corey Jackson.
The second 12 of seniors includes: Elliott County's Evan Faulkner, Ethan Faulkner and Jonathan Ferguson Hopkins County Central's Chuck Jones and Waggener's Dayvon Sloan.
In the listing of underclassmen, Pittman is followed by Scott County junior guard Chad Jackson, Jeffersontown junior guard Aaron Cosby, Scott County junior Dakotah Euton, Clark County sophomore Vinny Zollo and Holmes junior Ricardo Johnson.
Euton and Zollo have both committed to the University of Kentucky.

A big weekend of hoops is over and now we're set for a huge week of hoops. Later this morning, I will be posting an LIT preview.
There are some talented prospects in the LIT that starts tonight at Bellarmine University.
But for now, here are some leftovers from the weekend:
* I had a chance to watch Scott County's 71-64 win over Mason County in person and it was a dandy. Richie Phares had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Chad Jackson (photo) added 19 points and Ge-Lawn Guyn scored 13. Dakotah Euton had an off-night shooting (2-for-11) but finished with five points and 12 rebounds.

* And then on Saturday, I caught a few games at the Kentucky Prep Classic in the awesome gym at Montgomery County (loved the place!). The best game I saw was Elliott County's comeback win against Anderson County in overtime. C.J. Penny had 31 points for Anderson County, while Timmy Knipp led Elliott County with 21.

* With senior star Vee Sanford sidelined with an injury, freshman Jaylen Beckham led Lexington Catholic with 21 points in a 77-68 overtime loss to Beech (Tenn.). |

Many of the states top prospects were in action over the weekend. Here are some of the top performances, including Jeffersontown's Aaron Cosby, who helped lead the Chargers to a big win over previously unbeaten Eastern.
Cosby wasn't the only standout for Jeffersontown. Point guard Richard Kennedy scored 21 points for the Chargers. He filled in nicely for Thomas Jackson, who was out with an ankle injury.

Richie Phares scored 22 points and Chad Jackson pitched in with 19 points, as Scott County knocked off Mason County 71-64. Russ Middleton led Mason County with 31 points.

A rough Friday night
It was a tough night on press row at the Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine, but here are some nuggets from the quarterfinals and other games around the state.
And yes, for the record the tough part was me taking two hits.
In almost 19 years of covering sports, I've never had a player in any sport literally run over me. It happened twice tonight as players were flying all over the scorer's table. I'm happy to report my body is in one piece, but the laptop will need a few repairs!

* Trinity junior Josh Sewell has really come into his own this season and is playing great. Freshman Chris Harrison is solid at the point and senior Melvyn Little - despite the charge I drew on him - had the best game I've seen him ever have against J'town.

* The stars put up some numbers tonight for Scott County in an 87-60 blowout of Bryan Station. Richie Phares had 25 points and eight rebounds, Ge-Lawn Guyn scored 21 points and Dakotah Euton added 19 points and 12 rebounds. Chad Jackson also tacked on 10 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
* Vee Sanford scored 22 points and Taylor Botkin and Jaylen Beckham added 15 points apiece as Lexington Catholic edged Mason County 64-61 in overtime. Treg Setty had 29 points to lead Mason County.

* C.J. Penny scored 26 points as Anderson County downed Owen County 67-49. |

It was a huge weekend of hoops. A lot going on here and with recruiting prospects all across the country. It's getting closer to tournament time.
Here's a look a a few nuggets:
* Scott County won the Toyota Classic with wins on Friday over Adair County (82-60) and on Saturday over Tates Creek (67-54). University of Kentucky commitment Dakotah Euton hit 13 of 17 from the field, including 6 of 8 three-pointers, and had 35 points against Adair County. Richie Phares had 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Euton added 16 points and Chad Jackson had 13 points, six rebounds and six asissts in the Tates Creek win. Marcellus Barksdale had 19 points and six rebounds for Tates Creek.
* In a game with ridiculous numbers, West Jessamine's Jarrod Polson hit 10 of 12 field goals and 30 of 37 free throws (yes, 30 of 37) and scored 51 points in a 102-92 win over Lexington Catholic. Polson also had six assists and five rebounds. Vee Sanford led Lexington Catholic with 32 points on 13 of 29 from the field. |

No mention of Miami in this article on Vee. I went to the Lexington Catholic vs. Scott County game on 2/14. Vee was very impressive, but I also like Richie Phares from Scott County. UK has offered him a walk-on spot, but I think he could really excel at the MAC level.
Vee, considered one of the top college prospects in the state, has scholarship offers from UAB, Bradley, Charlotte, Indiana State, Nebraska, SMU, Saint Louis, Toledo and Wyoming. He's also on the recruiting radar of Georgetown University and UK.

I wasn't in town for the final day of the Sweet 16 but did catch some of the title game on the KHSAA's live stream earlier this evening.
And what an event it was at Rupp Arena.
Here are a few thoughts from the week:
* Congrats to Covington Holmes and coach David Henley for winning the title in stunning fashion - a 67-63 win over Central in double overtime.
* Junior Elijah Pittman fouled out in the final but still led Holmes with 14 points. He's ridiculously talented - perhaps more than any other player in any class in the state - but still needs to grow up a bit. He doesn't play hard all the time, sometimes tending to 'goof'
off. But when he's on, Pittman is sensational.
* Ricardo Johnson is the other star junior for Holmes. He was sensational for most of the week, picking up MVP honors in the tournament. Johnson had six points and seven rebounds in the title game. Xavier and Kentucky are watching Johnson.

* LexCath senior Vee Sanford sure drew a crowd - of college coaches. Look for him to make his final four visits within the next few weeks and then try to make a decision. One thing is for sure, Sanford has plenty of good options.

More Vee Sanford
There's been a lot of talk about Lexington Catholic senior guard Vee Sanford in recent weeks with all the college attention he's been getting. And for good reason.
The 6-foot-3 Sanford has really turned it on and the colleges are coming out of the woodwork. He's one of the hottest names on the recruiting scene at this point.
As many as 15 schools were watching on Thursday and I understand it could grow to even more coaches - a few more head coaches - on Friday evening in the game against Holmes.
"I think he's used to it and doesn't worry about it," LexCath coach Brandon Salsman said. "He's played against almost every major coach in the country."
Sanford reeled off a number of schools when asked about a list of colleges on Thursday, including Georgetown University, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Marquette, Kansas State, Baylor, UNC-Charlotte, Wyoming, Oklahoma State, Saint Louis, Bradley, Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth.
He said he was "still on the radar" with Kentucky.
Central Florida, South Florida, Marshall, George Mason, Wright State, Fairfield and South Carolina were among the schools that also had coaches in attendance. |

The college coaches are out in full force at the Sweet 16 today.
In the house to watch Lexington Catholic (Vee Sanford) were more than a dozen coaches, including Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie. The coaches are also here for Covington Holmes.
Also here is Indiana assistant coach Tim Buckley, Eastern Kentucky assistant coach Everick Sullivan and South Carolina assistant coach Cypheus Bunton.
South Florida head coach Stan Heath is here, along with Marshall head coach Donnie Jones, George Mason head coach Jim Larranaga and Fairfield head coach Ed Cooley.
Other assistant coaches in the building are from Wright State, Nebraska, Loyola and Bradley. I am sure there are more, I will try and track them down. |
