Well there has been a lot of talk this week about the beauty of Miami's campus vs. the...well brownness of BG's campus. I thought I would just throw out a new topic so we can all remember fondly our favorite places at Miami (if you are still a student savor them while you can) Here are some of mine.
Ses Chapel in the afternoon - I would always go here to take a nap or just have some quiet time.
Western Campus/The Hub in the fall - Kumler chapel with turning leaves, and the same with Upham...so beautiful.
Jimmy Johns/ The Buzz - Ok so I know the former is no longer around but I enjoyed it while there.
Finally - 12 North Elm street - better known as "The Rock" I had some good times in the house, I hope it has not been condemned. Let's hear yours. _________________ Doing all I can to teach a cajun girl to love college hockey... |

At night, when I'm coming back from King Library, I love walking around the Seal and under Upham Arch. It looks really nice when lit up in the evening. _________________ "We will shoot for perfection, and we can settle for excellence."

Some others:
-- The way campus just pops out of nowhere as you approach Oxford on 73. (I grew up in northwest Ohio, and the quickest way into town was 732, but, unless we anticipated tons of traffic, the Old Bobcat used to drive around Oxford so we could come in on 73.
-- The Bishop Gardens.
-- The back road from East Quad down to Yager on a fall Saturday.
-- The view from either of the porch swings at Bishop Hall _________________ "Man, if I ever find out who let Northern Illinois and Buffalo into the league, they're in trouble."

Great topic!
I have fond, fond memories of East Quad -- and the walk behind Symmes by the formal gardens to Dogwood Grove is great.
I'll cast a vote for Presser Hall as the most underrated building on campus. It's a neat building (I had a class there junior year) and the walk behind the building over the bridge to Western is beautiful. |

Yes, I had a history course at Presser Hall my frosh year (when I lived in Morris Hall).
I really loved being by the seal and looking through the Upham arch............loved that little "forest" right out in front of Upham Hall. |

As someone who attended Miami AND BGSU, I've got to say, Miami does have a beautiful campus. I lived in Stanton Hall, way down at the end of campus, so got to walk a WHOLE lot and see a whole lot of pretty things. The whole campus is beautiful. No doubt about it.
BG has some really nice spots on campus as well though, the quad between the Administration building and University Hall, Prout Chappel, and THE most beautiful place in the Mid American Conference, the student section in Anderson Arena.
I started at Miami and ended up at BG...it's not pretty buildings and venues that make a good school, but if it was, Miami would be one of the best!
BTW, You're all invited over to www.ay-ziggy-zoomba.com anytime! It's going to be a great one Tuesday night!!

...Yes I really liked Presser too, I spent a lot of time there because I was involved with a ministry that met there...I love the architecture on Western because it is different than the rest...I also love the road that runs next to Stanton and Elliot, very pretty _________________ Doing all I can to teach a cajun girl to love college hockey... |

I'm especially partial to my air-conditioned single room in my fraternity house, but as far as more public campus/Oxford locales are concerned...
Well, for starters, my two absolute favorite places in Oxford were (in order) Looney T. Bird's and Buzz. Despite my best efforts to singlehandedly keep both establishments in business, they've closed. I've since quit drinking coffee because I refuse to go to Starbucks.
Anyway, let's see here. What else do I like...
I'm a big fan of Culler Hall (surprise, surprise). I get a kick out of the fact that you can tell it was designed to be the physics building since it has 5 men's restrooms and only 3 women's restrooms.
I've never been too big on the Formal Gardens (probably because I wasn't an East Quadder), but the Bishop Woods (which are right next to Culler...sensing a pattern here?) are absolutely stunning in the fall.
My favorite walk, though, was Freshman year, when we'd come back to Morris from Uptown by walking straight down the Slantwalk. The Slantwalk is Miami to me. _________________ "Psycho was low on talent. Psycho was low on athleticism. Psycho can play on my team any day. Psycho has the biggest heart of any player I have seen."

Upham Arch, late Friday night, light snow falling, your best girl in your arms.
My freshman dorm room, "the sun room" in the Pines. In the lobby of the grand old lady was a double staircase that led to the two second floor corridors. In between at the head of the stairs was the sun room. Long and narrow, one long wall was all windows. That was no cookie cutter, bland box, dorm room.
I'm with DG on the way campus "pops" into view on Rt. 73. The last time I was in Oxford, a couple years ago, my heart was actually racing with anticipation as I came up 73.
Every time I'd return to Oxford, when I'd come over that last rise and that giant globe suddenly came into view, seemingly out of nowhere, I knew I was back in my world.
The stone bridges on the Western campus. Stand on one in the fall and look over at the other. There is nothing more beautiful anywhere.
The Purity. Nough said. _________________ Play the best, beat the best, be the best. |

Come on! How has nobody mentioned a nighttime view of Central Quad from the Sundial?? With McCracken all lit up and the stars out, I don't think there's a better place on this campus... _________________ Founder of the "Dark Horse" Doug Penno fan club. |

RSR said he lived in The Pines on East Quad. I think they named it after somebody after I graduate, but I forget what it is called now. _________________ "Man, if I ever find out who let Northern Illinois and Buffalo into the league, they're in trouble."

(The) Chuck
The Pines (or incorrectly, Pines Hall) as a freshman. It was a VERY old building in East Quad, not even sure its still there. I don't believe it was originally built as a dormitory, and once served as a sanitarium. Hence the sun room. It was almost always a female dorm, but my freshmen year they put men in it for some reason. Boy was I lucky.
Later an RA in Stanton and finally off campus. _________________ Play the best, beat the best, be the best. |

That would be Wilson, then. They have a nifty haunted house every year featuring "mental patients" whose treatment went dreadfully wrong.
And, just to get those memories flowing for you, here's a picture:

Yup...the Chuck you are talking about Wilson...well it is named Wilson now, due to all of the haunting rumors etc. they now put on a great haunted house on Halloween, or tonight....if they still do it. It was not necessarily scary, but it was fun. _________________ Doing all I can to teach a cajun girl to love college hockey... |

Thanks for the picture chuck, it is now my desktop background. It will always be the Pines to me, although since Wilson is my middle name, I can live with that too. _________________ Play the best, beat the best, be the best. |

| It indeed was the Pines. I lived there 3 semesters in 1958-9. Great Dorm; big front porch for cards; side yard for laying out in the sun; big rooms (we even had a bathroom). |

Took my girlfriend that way as we walked from Cook Field to Yager for the UC game. I lived in Reid, and didn't take advantage of the little park behind Reid/Symmes nearly enough.
And while it's not my favorite, I'll mention the view from the 3rd floor of Hepburn, looking north towards Millett/Yager and the distant hills. |

1) The balcony in the rotunda of Alumni Hall overlooking the statue of George Washington.
2) South Quad on the first warm day of spring ... for obvious reasons to anyone who lived on South Quad.
3) The Hub ... 'cause BG students would be confused by the shade cast by all those tall bushy looking things.
4) The attic of the MUDEC center on Monterrey Ave.
5) 3 inches from the glass at Goggin. |

I'm at east quadder, so I have to agree with the formal gardens (girls loved that place), and the back road down to Yager. I had a class in Yager freshmen year (athletic training). I could get my bike going pretty fast down that hill, but coming back was rough.
Nobody mentioned the illegal walk out to the bluffs at night - no better place in Oxford!
Of course, good ole 114 W. Sycamore St. How many people ever had bats in their house??
I also agree with the drive in on 73, but the part I like the best is when you come over the hill that first shows the tops of the buildings through the tree-tops - that always means I'm almost home.
But above all else, my favorite place in Oxford has to Mac & Joe's!! _________________ 2005 - the year of Nan_e! |

Even though it was not "on campus"- there was a pizza place uptown called Bruno's, I believe, which still to this day is the best pizza I've ever had.
On campus I lived for two years in East Quad in Collins- and it was just beautiful. But for a business student like myself that enjoyed sleeping in the best place on campus was Swing because I could roll out of bed 5 minutes before any class in Laws Hall and still be there on time. |

Or East. Why do you think I took up running again? It was the quickest way to get down to South Quad on the first warm day of spring. _________________ "Man, if I ever find out who let Northern Illinois and Buffalo into the league, they're in trouble."
