Lets give this thread a try!
Obviously each generation has a certain song or band that defines their time spent at Miami. But does anyone have a specific song that sums up their time at Miami? Maybe one that was playing at your first "real" college party? Or perhaps one that became popular during a certain semester that brings back memories every time you hear it?
Mine would most definately be "Hey Girl" by OAR. It seems like you wouldn't be allowed to become a soph till you had this song on CD or on your CPU. It reminds me of sneaking beers into the dorm room! |

Can't narrow it down to just one. Here are a few songs and albums I will always associate with Miami (most of which coincide with my freshman year):
- Anything off U2's Joshua Tree (particularly "Where the Streets Have no Name")
- Anything off So by Peter Gabriel (particularly "Red Rain")
- Anything from Life's Rich Pageant by REM (particularly "Superman")
- And, of course "Blister in the Sun" by the Violent Femmes |

| I will always associate Stevie Ray Vaughn with Miami as I heard of his death while getting ready for my first day of college class. Later that day walking along Slant Walk I could hear one of the frats blasting his music for all to hear. |

"Loser" by Beck
Heard it everytime I walked up slantwalk towards uptown blasting from the frat houses along Campus Ave. _________________ "I believe in the love that you gave me

Although I didn't care much for it- Frampton Comes Alive and especially that goofy "Show Me the Way" song with the mouthpiece singing was blared from every dorm and frat house.
Also I will always associate Queen's "We are the Champions" with Miami hockey- good thread, BTW |

I'd replace "Hey Girl" with "Crazy Game of Poker." _________________ "Psycho was low on talent. Psycho was low on athleticism. Psycho can play on my team any day. Psycho has the biggest heart of any player I have seen."

I took the long route through college, starting at Miami in fall of 1989 (end of hair bands) until finishing at Miami in Dec of 94 (fully into grunge). Yes, I know it was 5-1/2 years, but I took a full year off and spent another year at Butler inbetween, so it's not as bad as it looks.
Anyways, my first time at Miami, I distinctly recall B-52's "Love Shack" and Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire" as being "Miami" songs. I still think back to my freshman year when I hear them. I was a big-hair band fan, so Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood" and other assorted hair bands bring back memories (Whitesnake, Kix, Tesla, Warrant, etc).
Later on, other songs that make me think of Miami are (and these were not necessarily my favorite songs, just songs you heard everywhere): Ace of Base - "I saw the sign", Gin Blossoms - "Hey Jealousy", Sound Garden - "Black Hole Sun", anything by Stone Temple Pilots.
Didn't we have another thread somewhere about music while at Miami? I thought 78 started it somewhere, maybe in hockey thread? Mods, is it possible to move it here with this one? _________________ "You haven't lived until you've closed down the I-Bar at 4 A.M. AST." - thechuck_2112

I would have to say Pat McGee Band's "Rebecca" - they played two free concerts on campus during my four years at Miami so that song will always bring back the college memories for me. _________________ Doing all I can to teach a cajun girl to love college hockey... |

Speaking of Pat Mcgee....of the people who went to the Miami/Vandy game, did anyone see Pat after the game?? I, still to this day, know he said Miami sucked....of course he said this to cheer up the demoralized fans, but still, now i dont listen to him. Anybody else hear this or was the Jack Daniels playing tricks on me? _________________ Patrick Ewing:

the verve pipe "freshman" was the first song I heard at Miami -- walking to Millet for freshman convocation.
Also that stupid Nelly song... the one that goes, "I'm going down down baby, on you in the Range Rover..." -- we learned some stupid dance to it at frosh orientation and I can't hear that song without thinking of it.
I have to agree with "Crazy game of poker," "farmhouse" (Phish)... and John Mayer -- thanks to the author of this thread I've been listening to him for 4 years . _________________ she's back |

Starting my sophomore year when SRV died.
This wasn't the music of my time, but after graduation, after packing the car and leaving town. I turned on the radio, which happened to be on WEBN for some reason. They were playing I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home by Grand Funk Railroad. I always thought that was neat for some reason. _________________ Hens love roosters. Geese love ganders. Thanks to those folks who played "The Freshman" over and over again on the convocation route, I'm no longer allowed to sit on the front lawn of my own house when convocation lets out. kinda odd...but as i was driving up 73 to move in my freshman year, just as the campus came into view, the dramatic part of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was playing, whenever i hear that song now i think about that moment... _________________ “If you don't have goals, you are just wandering around.” - Ryan Jones |

Funny you mention Country Joe and the Fish. The Washington Times had an article yesterday on Country Joe declining an invitation to Vietnam to accept a World Peace Music Award. In the article, he recounts his parents' history with the American Communist Party. "My parents were American Communists for some time, but they left the party because of a lack of democratic positions by the party."
Not real sure if he realized the irony of that statement. Anyway, it struck me as kinda' funny. |

Renee, I remember that freshman convocation all too well. And the other song that you're referring to is "Country Grammar" and I still know the dance to that song (I don't know if that's good or bad). _________________ "We will shoot for perfection, and we can settle for excellence."

This link sums up my Miami era (1984-1988 ) better than I could.
I remember listening to EVERYTHING U2, REM, and the Replacements put out and plenty of Husker Du and the Jesus and Mary Chain, too. _________________ "Man, if I ever find out who let Northern Illinois and Buffalo into the league, they're in trouble."

Love Shack - B52s. I remember when we put that song on everyone danced and the house literally started to shake.
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode. Samething. House would shake. Not my favorite song on the album but Violator in retrospect is their best album overall in my opinion.
I don't know the name of the song or the group but one party song heard all the time at Attractions went something like "alll I wanna do is zooma-zoom-zoom-zoom, in a boom-boom. JUST SHAKE YOUR BUTT!" That was also an anthem for spring break one year.
Freshman year, I blew out my speakers when a guy down the hall turned up the volume on the Beastie Boys - Paul Revere's ride. Peter Gabriel - So was one of my favs, as was Sinead O'Connor- the lion and the cobra.
Of course toward the end of my college career Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit could be heard multiple times a day. |
