Miami got nearly 15,000 applications for about 3,500 spots in the class entering this fall...[the] class also will have the highest percentage of minority students (10%)....Miami tuition for next year is $19,718. Each Ohio student will get a $5,000 scholarship and a Leader Scholarship ranging from $5,000 to $6,200.....the most an Ohio student will pay is $9,718. That's not counting other merit- or need-based aid for which he or she may qualify......40 percent of the Ohio freshmen will pay less next year than if the new pricing structure had not gone into effect....continuing students at Miami are not affected by the new tuition structure. They will be charged $9,063 next year, an 8.5-percent increase....About 33 percent of next year's freshmen will come from out of state, which is about the same as in previous classes, ....Just over half the applications were Ohioans this year.

I heard from a reliable "birdie" that Miami received more applications for this year's freshman class than Ohio State. Think about it more applicants for probably a third or a quarter of the slots that Ohio State has!

I saw the graduation programs from the high school when I got home yesterday. My high school lists all the scholarships earned by graduating seniors in the program (even those for schools the seniors won't be attending). Sure enough, there were two who got the "Ohio Resident Scholarship" and "Ohio Leadership Scholarship" for Miami. How does Miami get away with calling those scholarships? They have to give them out to every in-state student!

well, it is money that students apply to reducing their tuition bill, so in the strictest sense, it's a scholarship.

Look at it this way: athletic scholarships actually have nothing to do with academic ability; they are simply a reduction of tuition charges. The same thing with these scholarships.

Were you at one of the Lakota graduations in Millett yesterday? I noted the same thing at Lakota East's. I am not sure how Miami or the school go about noting those "scholarships". There were many from East with such a note, but my son was not noted that way. Interesting.

No, I'm back home in Zanesville now. I saw the graduation program for the school my mom teaches at.

we have over 35 people going to Miami this fall (myself included), and it did sound weird when they were announcing scholarships at the recognition assembly, everyone who got accepted to Miami had their name called for the leader one.

I think there was only a total of 35 people from my graduating class in high school that even went to college after graduation, let alone earn a degree. This was from a class of about 95.

I think I got you beat MUFan. There were about 30 people out of 103 in my high school class who went to college. I think of the 30 about 15 of us actually earned college degrees, but four of those 15 degrees were from Miami!

No, I'm back home in Zanesville now. Ending prepositions is something I'll put up with. Wink

Don't mean to trump you guys, but I had 50 kids in my graduating class...I would say around 10 went to a 4 year school!

I think maybe 7 graduated?

Yep...we didn't have a football team. Basketball was the big (only) thing at Franklin-Monroe. We have a pretty damn good tradition too...our all-time winning % is around 70% over the last 75 years or so..

Our football team in high school finished with 19 guys who could suit up. Made for interesting practices........However, they student population is roughly the same now, and they'll get around 35-40 kids out for the varsity team.

Think I've got everyone here beat (well, except for that Alaska guy). Graduating class of 44. To their credit, most of my classmates did go on to matriculate at various institutes of higher learning (one of whom joined me at Miami).

And yes, our homecoming is usually during basketball season. We did have a halfway decent soccer program, however (thus my passion for "the beautiful game"). Hard to field much of a football program when you have less than 100 guys in the whole high school, and those who weighed over 200 pounds could be counted on one hand with fingers left over.

I graduated fourth in my high school class but was unable to check the box on college applications for "top 5%." Wink

Maz, I know how you feel. I was one of 767. In fact at commencement I sat next to a girl I had never met. Found out she had been in the district since 7th grade. At my high school they called Miami "Lakota North"

That tells you how many kids went there. However more went to UC and OSU.

Now the key question is:

What size of town do you live in now?

I live in my hometown (I should get bonus hick points for that!), and it had an official 2000 census population of around 3,200. Total of about 20,000 in the county. I live within 1/4 mile of our business, 1/2 mile of my each of my two siblings who I'm in business with, and within 1 mile of my childhood home.

About 40K. But it's 19 miles from downtown DC. We live three miles from Mrs. DG's parents, and, assuming we stay in the same house, my boys will go to the same high school their mom did.

My hometown has a population of 2200. That's fairly steady-state because, as the Old Bobcat used to say, every time a baby is born, an unmarried man leaves town. My high school class had 78 graduates (four of whom were National Merit Finalists).

Devil Mom has relocated to the town where I was born. She is one of about 1200 residents, and the town is the county seat of a county with a grand total of about 12,000 residents (not counting the deer or wild turkeys).
